Rangers can test the waters for Bologna midfielder Lewis Ferguson in the transfer window.

The Gers have been linked with a sensational move for the Scotland international, who struggled for regular minutes at the Serie A club last season.

Derek McInnes is building an ambitious project at the Light Blues and the Scotland international could potentially be a part of it.

As things stand, Ferguson's move to Ibrox seems a bit far-fetched after his performances at the 2026 World Cup.

In North America, the midfielder was one of the few Scottish players who left with their heads held high.

The former Aberdeen star has shown world-class ability over the years, but the Govan side could offer him an opportunity to showcase it on a regular basis.

What Bologna are now saying about Rangers target Lewis Ferguson

Bologna signed Ferguson from Aberdeen in 2022 and he played under Thiago Motta for two years, becoming a key player for him.

The former Italy international, who went on to manage Juventus, described the Scot as a "warrior" who set an example for his teammates.

While there has been talk of the midfielder's future at the Rossoblu being uncertain, a slight twist has emerged.

Andrea Tarozzi, the Serie A club's assistant manager, has claimed Ferguson is a "fundamental" player for them.

The only way the Glaswegian outfit can now determine whether the Italian side are bluffing is by submitting an immediate £17million bid, widely reported to be the Scotland international's current price tag.

Speaking on Bologna's official YouTube channel on 15 July, Tarozzi said: "This is probably a question more suited for the coach in the sense that all I can tell you is that Ferguson is an extremely important player for our team.

"I can write this in capital letters in the sense that he's a fundamental player."

Even without Ferguson, though, Rangers' central midfield is already taking shape.

What Ibrox recruitment says about move for Ferguson

As heavily covered by Ibrox News recently, Rangers have agreed a deal to sign Vanja Dragojevic from Partizan, which would make him their seventh addition of the summer.

The Gers have already added Dan Neil and Cammy Devlin to their ranks on free transfers.

While the futures of Nicolas Raskin, Connor Barron and Mohamed Diomande could be up in the air, the Light Blues seem to have enough quality in the central midfield area.

McInnes has other positions to worry about and it wouldn't be surprising to see the Glaswegian outfit turn their focus away from signing Ferguson.
