How Lewis Ferguson agreement paves way for January move as behind-the-scenes Rangers talks revealed

Lewis Ferguson held talks to join Rangers in the summer.

There were rumours that the midfielder could have left Bologna before the window slammed shut, but has since been an important player for the Serie A side.

He has started in both of Bologna's opening league games, despite rumours of him joining the Gers, among other suitors in Europe.

Derek McInnes' arrival in Govan instantly sparked rumours of Ferguson reuniting with his former Aberdeen boss, and he was even spotted in Glasgow over the summer.

But the Bears have added several new faces to their large midfield, and on top of this, look set to keep Nicolas Raskin until January at the very least.

But it's now said that Ferguson had been in concrete talks with Rangers, and even agreed to join the club, too.

Lewis Ferguson was 'prepared' to join Rangers, but still can

Bologna were hoping to get at least £17million for Ferguson in the summer, as the both the player and McInnes were asked about the possibility of a transfer.

The Scottish international was always going to decide on his future once he returned home from the World Cup, and that's what he did.

While speaking on Open Goal, Derek Ferguson revealed how his son had been in concrete talks about joining the Gers, and even wanted the move.

He said: "The thing with Lewis was, he agreed everything [for Rangers move]. I've said that it was time for Lewis to change. he's been there for four years at Bologna and it's time for a new challenge.

"Most things were agreed. But there was never a bid put in. They had agreed a lot of stuff behind the scenes with Lewis.

"He was up for going to play under McInnes. He loves Del and has a lot of respect for him. He was prepared (to go)."

The fee of £17m is perhaps a little steep for Rangers, even though they spent big money on several players.

Both McInnes and Ferguson do have an admiration for each other though, and the former has hinted that he will play for the Light Blues at some point in the future.

However, what hasn't happened at Rangers this summer is most likely the reason as to why a deal couldn't be done.

That reason is Raskin.

Why January move still on for Ferguson on one condition

There's every chance that Ferguson demands a lesser price come January, with his contract set to expire in the summer of 2028.

There's also no guarantee that he will play well for the Italian side in the first half of the season, which could help the Gers' case.

But what will really help, is if Raskin leaves.

The Belgium international had agreed a move to join Turkish side Besiktas, but Rangers rejected the transfer.

Perhaps this is because they could not land their replacement in Ferguson due to the market having been and gone already.

January could be the perfect time to reassess and sanction respective deals on the pair.
