Everything Derek McInnes has said about Scott McKenna as Rangers transfer reunion on cards

Derek McInnes is a big fan of Scott McKenna as Rangers remain in need of defensive additions.

The Bears are far from finished this window, and McInnes is fully aware that his side is short at the back.

That was made even clearer in Rangers 1-1 draw at Dundee United in their season opener on Friday, with Ben Godfrey going off with an injury worry.

This forced McInnes to shift Dujon Sterling into central defence, with Ross McCrorie coming on to play at right-back.

Though the arrival of Olwethu Makhanya adds more cover at the back, it's understood that the Gers could yet sign another centre-half.

McKenna, who plays in Croatia with Dinamo Zagreb now, is someone McInnes knows all too well.

McInnes has already been reunited with two former players this summer, one being Lawrence Shankland, which technically wasn't planned.

The other is Cammy Devlin, who the former Hearts boss started in the draw to Dundee United.

Ibrox News gathered information on how McInnes wanted Devlin, though this made some fans question their boss, who has reunited with some of his former players who ultimately failed to cross the finish line last season for the Jambos.

However, the 55-year-old remembers his time at Aberdeen well, with McKenna being one player he used to love coaching.

Speaking on BBC Sportsound, former Rangers man Ian McCall weighed in on what he's heard about the Scotland international potentially coming to Ibrox.

McCall said, as picked up by the Daily Record: "The one thing managers like with a centre-back is if they can trust them, really trust them in the game. I think he needs one that he can really trust.

"I don't know who that may be; we heard rumours of big McKenna coming - I don't know if that's a goer, but I know Derek trusts him."

Now, it appears that there could be some legs over the rumour.

The latest on McKenna to Rangers

STV radio host Ewen Cameron has reported this Saturday that talks between Rangers and McKenna are ongoing.

Speaking about McKenna in 2018, McInnes showed that he always thought highly of the 29-year-old.

He said, as quoted by the Press and Journal: "I think he is the best centre-half in Scotland right now.

"I think Scott will go straight to the English Premier League in time. He will bypass the Championship. He is too good not to be playing in the Premier League in the future."

BBC Sport also reported in 2018 how McInnes called the Scot's overall game "magnificent" amid previous transfer interest that came Aberdeen's way, before he eventually left to join Nottingham Forest in 2020.

McKenna did indeed go on to play Premier League football, but could now head back to the Scottish Premiership, though Cameron has since reported that a loan deal has been thrown into jeopardy.

There were rumours that of the player joining the Gers at the start of July, so this one may rumble on for a little longer.
