Danny Rohl says Lawrence Shankland conversation proves one thing about his final days at Rangers

Danny Rohl revealed he held a conversation with Lawrence Shankland before he signed for Rangers.

Rohl departed Ibrox in dramatic circumstances last month, and was swiftly replaced by Derek McInnes.

The German had only spent eight months at Ibrox, before he was swayed by Austrian outfit Red Bull Salzburg.

His hasty exit left the fanbase a little divided, with some appreciative of the way he rebuilt after the Russell Martin disaster and others not convinced he was fully committed to the project.

However, the former Sheffield Wednesday boss has now spoken out about the final days of his tenure at Ibrox.

And he claims that his role in bringing Shankland to the Gers from rivals Hearts proves one thing about his final days at Ibrox.

Shankland's arrival at Ibrox was the first of a heavy recruitment drive by Rangers during the summer transfer window.

Rohl is adamant that he is the one who wanted to bring Shankland to Ibrox this summer.

Moreover, he thinks that his role in speaking to Shankland and convincing him to make the move is proof that he was committed to Rangers right until his point of departure.

Speaking to the Daily Record, Rohl said: "“It’s interesting because after the season, I spoke with Shankland for 20 or 30 minutes while he was on holiday.

“I told him what I expected and he was really strongly committed. This proves that at that moment, I was still prepared and focused on what I had to do at Rangers.

“With Shankland, I told them he’d be a good option for us, it was clear. But I told Lawrence that with Youssef Chermiti on fire and Ryan Naderi there, it might mean some rotation.

Will Lawrence Shankland be Rangers' main striker?

Rohl's comments actually spark quite an interesting debate about Shankland's role this season.

When Shankland played for McInnes at Tynecastle, he was an undisputed starter and the main up front for the Jambos.

Many Rangers fans had been calling for a signing like Shankland, who knows the Scottish Premiership and has proven he has the bottle to grind it out in the league.

Rohl was seemingly hinting that he would not be a regular starter in European competition, which begs the question of how involved he will be under McInnes.

You would assume that given McInnes knows his strengths and how to he thrives, that he will be a leading man at Ibrox.

But maybe he will also have to accept that there will be a fair bit of rotation in store for his debut campaign at Rangers.
