Connor Barron name-dropped as Rangers player to compete with Cammy Devlin amid exit talk

Connor Barron could leave Rangers before the end of the summer window.

Everything was going well for the midfielder at Ibrox last season until he suffered a serious knee injury that kept him out of action for several months.

The 23-year-old then got himself fit and back in contention right at the business end of the season, but ultimately did not have a big role to play for Danny Rohl, who orchestrated the downfall of the Bears anyway.

Derek McInnes' arrival always meant that Barron could have had a renewed opportunity in Govan, but several signings have put his future in doubt.

Things haven't gone Barron's way recently, but there may yet be hope for his Rangers future despite talk of a move away.

Cammy Devlin's arrival was another signing that put Barron's future further at risk, with the likes of Vanja Dragojevic and Dan Neil also at the club.

McInnes has shown trust in Tochu Chukwuani in the early stages of this season so far, with Barron yet to feature.

But with the former Aberdeen man set to return for McInnes soon, he could make a quick impression before the window shuts.

While speaking on The Breakdown with Charlie Mulgrew and Ryan Stevenson, Kevin Thomson explained why Barron may still have a future at Ibrox.

Thomson said: "Connor's a friend of mine. I think he's as good as Devlin and can give him a run for his money.

"I hope Connor can force his way in; he's obviously been linked with a move [away]."

Thomson went on to explain how he was "disappointed" with Devlin's performance in the season opener against Dundee United, as he thought the Terrors' midfield was far superior.

If Barron can get himself back in the squad within the next week or so, he may still have a small window of opportunity to impress McInnes.

Barron has been linked with a move to Bologna, mooted as key for a potential swap deal for Lewis Ferguson.

He's also said to be a target for West Ham in their bid for promotion back to the Premier League, with Lazio also keen.

A £10million fee has been suggested as something the Bears should look to get for Barron, should they sell the midfielder.

Nothing is advanced in terms of a move away for the player, though time is running out for him.
