Cammy Devlin debut watch: Rangers man has turbulent first outing vs Dundee United

Cammy Devlin had a mixed bag in his Rangers debut in the 1-1 draw against Dundee United this Friday.

Derek McInnes' reign got off to a disappointing start as he made some big calls for his first starting eleven.

One of the big decisions that the 55-year-old made was to include Devlin ahead of the likes of Dan Neil, Tochi Chukwuani and Vanja Dragojevic.

Neil did come on at halftime, but for Djeidi Gassama, as McInnes looked for more stability in midfield

The Gers boss initially started with two in midfield, but given that his side won the second half, it appears that the changes were really needed.

Devlin was, of course, part of that midfield which struggled throughout the game, though he had some good moments for Rangers to take encouragement from.

Ibrox News gathered information on Rangers' chase for Devlin over the summer, as the Bears pipped in front of MLS sides for his signature.

The Aussie showed his footballing IQ in moments, making good interceptions and sweeping up at the back.

However, going forward he showed a lack of creativity, something which haunted the Gers in midfield last season.

At times he was hooking the ball forward aimlessly, and proved that he won't be much of a goal threat around the edge of the box.

That's not to write him off; he was tenacious and looked like a leader at times in the middle of the park, and will clearly need time to settle in and get used to his new teammates.

When making way for Findlay Curtis in the 82nd minute, Devlin ran as fast as he could off the field, shouting words of encouragement at the former as he looked to try and change the game off the bench.

There is no room for big egos in this dressing room, especially under McInnes, which is probably another reason he wanted to reunite with the Australian international.

Devlin showed a bunch of energy at Tannadice, as he proved a huge part of Hearts' near title win last season.

It was a mixed performance for Devlin on his maiden start for the Gers, but one he can most certainly build on from.
