Connor Barron could leave Rangers with new transfer question as Bologna ramp up search
Connor Barron remains a target for Bologna, with any exit only set to raise a big transfer question for Rangers.
Barron has spent the past two seasons as Ibrox, racking up 83 appearances in that time.
The Scotland international started just 16 Scottish Premiership matches last season.
However, he has recently emerged as a summer transfer target for Serie A side Bologna.
Ironically, that is where Rangers target Lewis Ferguson is currently plying his trade.
If Bologna push ahead with a move and Barron does leave, it poses a fresh question for Derek McInnes.
Is it Lewis Ferguson or bust for Rangers?
Ferguson is undoubtedly a fanciful target for Rangers. He would cost a club-record fee to sign, for starters.
And yet Rangers have some hope of landing their former player, with Nicolas Raskin's possible Ibrox sale bringing in some revenue.
Meanwhile, Gazzetta dello Sport's print edition reports on Wednesday that Barron remains on Bologna's radar.
The new update is that they are now pushing ahead with plans to bring in a new midfielder, with other names also on their radar.
If Barron was to leave, Rangers would need to ask themselves whether all their eggs should go in the Ferguson basket.
Or if instead a couple of new midfielders, for a much smaller fee, would instead make more sense.
Selling Barron and signing Ferguson would be a dream scenario, but that massive asking price just raises too many doubts.
Rangers' business so far has had a bit of a scattergun approach to it, which will not be helped if left scrambling for another midfielder.
Barron is everything Rangers need in a player right now
Barron was previously hailed as a "warrior" by former Rangers caretaker Barry Ferguson.
Ferguson also described him as a "sponge" given the way he took information on board.
That is a great feature for any player to have, of course, as is the fact - in Rangers' case - that he is Scottish.
Bringing in, and indeed retaining, players who understand what it means to play for Rangers is key.
Bologna can go ahead and test Rangers' resolve for Barron, but keeping hold of the 23-year-old right now surely makes more sense.
