Bologna want to sign Connor Barron from Rangers after failing to get him a few years back.

The Scotland international agreed a pre-contract deal with the Gers and joined them in the summer of 2024, with Aberdeen receiving a compensation fee.

In the last two seasons, the midfielder has been in and out of the starting lineup under multiple managers and it remains to be seen how Derek McInnes views him.

Barron could potentially end up being the ultimate transfer weapon at Ibrox to get a deal over the line for Bologna's Lewis Ferguson this season.

With the Glaswegian outfit looking to build a team capable of winning the William Hill Premiership immediately, the Serie A side's midfielder is being eyed in G51.

The 26-year-old could be on his way out of the Italian club after standing out for Scotland at the 2026 World Cup and the Govan side may have an advantage in the race for his signature.

Connor Barron well aware as Rangers reject offer

In 2024, Bologna wanted Barron to hold off on deciding his future, but the midfielder ultimately couldn't refuse the Gers.

The Rossoblu then made an approach for the Scottish ace last summer, but Kevin Thelwell shut down any possibility of his exit.

According to the Daily Record on 5 July, Bologna have continued to monitor Barron, who remains on their transfer shortlist.

The former Aberdeen youngster's entourage are said to be well aware of the ongoing interest from the Italian club, but only time will tell how his situation develops in G51.

Why Bologna still want Connor Barron

Ferguson has asked to leave Bologna this summer as Rangers hope to pull off one of the biggest coups of the transfer window.

Apart from needing to find a replacement for one of their captains, the Serie A side clearly have other reasons to pursue Barron.

The two Scottish stars made a name for themselves at Aberdeen as all-action midfielders capable of playing in multiple roles, with their strengths being intensity in winning the ball back and quality when distributing it.

Bologna arguably see some similarities between Barron and Ferguson and it will be interesting to see whether the Glaswegian outfit can now use that to their advantage.
