As Rangers eye James Overy swoop, why Man United star is already tipped for the top

Rangers clearly have one eye on the future as Manchester United youngster James Overy has emerged as a target.

Gers fans are currently more occupied about who will be added to Derek McInnes' senior squad.

Six new signings have so far been made at Ibrox this summer, while a seventh could be on the verge of being confirmed.

Ibrox News carried reports this week that Vanja Dragojevic is close to being announced by Rangers, even if it is taking longer than expected.

A new name has now emerged on Rangers' possible list of targets, albeit he is not exactly a household name.

While Overy is still not established, there is every reason to believe he could be a star of the future.

Rangers fans are desperate to see some academy prospects of their own integrated into the first team.

But it may well be that some of those talents are usurped should the Gers bring in Overy from United.

According to a report from the Daily Mail on Tuesday, Rangers are monitoring Overy.

A-League clubs are also said to be interested in the "rising star", with this "one to watch".

Overy is an 18-year-old right-back who represents Australia at age-grade level.

However, he previously played for Scotland Under-19s, whom he qualifies for through his mother, and has not yet made his senior debut for Australia.

He was named as one of 60 of the best young talents in world football by The Guardian in 2024 - usually a good indicator of a player heading for the top.

Why Overy fits ideal Rangers transfer strategy

McInnes need players for there here and now if Rangers are to finish top of the pile in Scotland this season.

In fairness to the Gers, they are bringing in some good additions and do not look finished yet.

The club must also have one eye on the future, though, and someone like Overy could easily be a star a couple of years from now.

If a deal is there to be done with English heavyweights United, the Gers should go for it.

Overy's Scottish links will surely only help in what could be a smart piece of business.
