Why Danny Rohl looks more than happy to take credit for any Rangers success this season

Danny Rohl has been speaking out on his high-profile departure from Rangers earlier this summer.

The German left the Gers stunned when taking up an offer to manage RB Salzburg.

Rohl had previously been linked with Wolfsburg, but it seemed certain he would stay at Ibrox when that chatter went quiet.

Salzburg confirmed Rohl's appointment a little over a month ago, on the same day Derek McInnes was hired as his replacement at Rangers.

Rohl had already started planning for the 2025-26 campaign with Rangers, including holding talks with certain transfer targets.

And his latest comments on Lawrence Shankland show the 37-year-old could be about to take credit for any Rangers success this season.

Ibrox News has already covered Rohl's quotes on his final days as Rangers manager.

In the same interview with the Daily Record, Rohl revealed that he held talks with Shankland prior to his Rangers move.

Shankland reunites with McInnes at Ibrox, with many believing the two deals were linked.

But Rohl was a driving force behind the transfer being struck.

“It’s interesting because after the season, I spoke with Shankland for 20 or 30 minutes while he was on holiday," he said.

“I told him what I expected and he was really strongly committed. This proves that at that moment, I was still prepared and focused on what I had to do at Rangers.

“With Shankland, I told [Rangers chiefs] he’d be a good option for us, it was clear. But I told Lawrence that with Youssef Chermiti on fire and Ryan Naderi there, it might mean some rotation."

Rohl, not just in this snippet but in many other parts of the interview, is all too quick to make himself look good.

While it would be harsh to say the former Sheffield Wednesday boss was a massive failure in Glasgow, he ultimately failed in his only mission - to win the title.

If Shankland bangs in the goals that leads the Gers to title glory this coming campaign, you can be sure Rohl will again point out the part he played in the deal.

Rohl shared that some other players signed by Rangers so far this summer were also on his radar.

He also stated how it will be "interesting" to see how the raft of new players - seven and counting - will integrate into the side.

Rangers are now accustomed to squad overhauls between seasons and it never really pays off.

The hope is that things will be different this time, with Shankland one of those who looks ready to hit the ground running.
