Rangers fans may be left wondering how news of BBC Scotland's closure will impact the Sportscene show.

The football highlights programme celebrated 50 years on TV last year, having first aired in August 1975.

The show provides highlights from the day's matches and various pundit reaction.

Some of the punditry on Rangers games is questionable, but it is a convenient source for catching up not just on Gers games but also the latest action from across the Scottish Premiership.

Championship matches are also regularly aired live on Friday nights.

News of BBC Scotland closing down from the spring, then, and becoming online only, will raise the obvious question as to what happens next for Sportscene.

Will BBC Sportscene still be aired?

BBC announced on Tuesday that BBC Scotland, as well as BBC Three, will become online-only next year.

That means some content will be shown via iPlayer, while certain programmes will also make the switch to the standard BBC One and BBC Two.

But this would mean clashing with the English Premier League highlights if aired on BBC One at the same time.

Nothing has yet been mentioned about Sportscene, but with it being a regular fixture on BBC One Scotland, it is expected to make the switch to iPlayer.

What is less clear is whether it remains as it is currently packaged, or instead if highlights are just shared without the need of any pundits.

How long does BBC's Sportscene contract have left to run?

BBC own the right to show Scottish Premiership highlights until 2029.

That contract has been paid, so the Beeb will not want to forego showing something they have paid for.

Whether it is renewed in a few years time is a different matter entirely.

With live fixtures behind a paywall on Sky Sports and Premier Sports, it is important highlights and live games further down the pyramid are aired to the masses.

Hopefully Sportscene will therefore continue as it is, albeit likely via a phone, laptop or tablet rather than through the TV.
