The one big winner from Rangers friendly as Derek McInnes checks on outcasts
Derek McInnes got a chance to run the rule over a number of his Rangers fringe players on Tuesday afternoon.
The Gers arranged a behind-closed-doors friendly with Dundee at their Auchenhowie training base.
Three days on from Rangers drawing 2-2 with Dundee in the Scottish Premiership, they this time fell to a 2-1 defeat.
The contest was arranged in another week with no midweek matches for the Gers due to not being in European action.
While the result did not go Rangers' way, the scoreline - unlike at the weekend - mattered little.
Instead, it was a good chance for McInnes to give plenty of back-up players some minutes, with further details now emerging on the friendly.
Who scored for Rangers in Dundee friendly?
The Daily Record reports that Dundee scored via one penalty but had another one saved by Liam Kelly.
Charlie Reilly and a trialist were said to be on target in the 2-1 win for Dundee.
Ross McCausland scored Rangers' only goal and could be argued to be the big winner from the friendly as far as the Gers are concerned.
The attacking midfielder has regularly been overlooked by McInnes, with his only appearance coming in a Premier Sports Cup clash with St Mirren in August.
McCausland also scored in that match - a 5-1 win - so it may well be that he is slowly forcing his way back into the picture.
Despite strong links with a move away from Ibrox in the summer, McCausland remained at Rangers beyond the transfer window closing.
Who else played for Rangers in behind-closed-doors friendly?
The same report states that Bojan Miovski, Findlay Curtis, Vanja Dragojevic, Tochi Chukwuani and Ben Godfrey were also used in the friendly.
Each of those are pushing for more regular first-team minutes, with this game set up as a chance for them to keep ticking over and perhaps send a message to McInnes.
Rangers have a deep squad and McInnes knows there will be times this season when he will have to heavily rotate.
All those on the outside looking in can do is continue showing what they are capable of in training and hope their chance arises.
