Rangers: Thelo Aasgaard now has chance to become national hero as World Cup blockbuster set
Rangers' Thelo Aasgaard may have the chance to go all the way with Norway at the World Cup this year.
The 24-year-old watched on as his nation beat Brazil 2-1 in the Round of 16 thanks to an Erling Haaland brace on Sunday.
Norway have booked their spot in the quarter-final, and will now face England on Saturday after the Three Lions beat Mexico in a 3-2 thriller.
Interestingly, Aasgaard's one and only performance at the World Cup this year came in a 4-1 loss to France, where he got himself on the scoresheet.
Rangers fans may feel like he has deserved more game time up until this point, but the midfielder has been a victim of his own nation's success.
Now is the time when things will start to get even trickier for Norway, and Rangers fans could see Aasgaard feature.
Thelo Aasgaard could become national hero for Norway and Scotland
Aasgaard had a mixed season for Rangers, and perhaps on paper, his statistics look better than what Ibrox saw.
The former Luton Town star racked up 14 goal contributions for the Bears, but, like many players, suffered for large parts of the season due to failing head coaches.
Still, Aasgaard did enough to convince Stale Solbakken that he was worthy enough of making the squad for North America, and now he finds himself where not many Rangers players have ever been in history.
Nicolas Raskin could also join him in advancing to the quarter-final, should Belgium defeat the USA, as Borna Barisic is the man to beat for them, as the former Ibrox favourite reached the Semi-final with Croatia in 2022.
However, Aasgaard has the chance to not only become a hero for Norway, but for fans all across Scotland, who will be eager to see England's downfall.
The Tartan Army haven't had much to celebrate this summer, and things would only be made worse if the Three Lions actually went on to win the whole tournament.
Aasgaard could pop up off the bench to do the damage, as Rangers fans may be intrigued to see what happens with the attacking midfielder this summer.
Latest on Thelo Aasgaard's future
Atalanta have been linked with a move for Aasgaard, who only joined the Gers last summer.
The Norway international penned terms to stay at Ibrox until 2029, but is already wanted by another big European side.
However, the suggestions are that Rangers aren't keen on cashing in on the forward yet, and would like to see him develop at the club even further.
Derek McInnes will be keen to get to work with Aasgaard, as the new Rangers manager will need to figure out where to play him best.
