Kris Boyd ‘wouldn’t be surprised’ as Rangers tipped for another big deal after Lawrence Shankland

Kris Boyd has tipped Rangers to secure at least one more big deal this summer following the signing of Lawrence Shankland.

Just over a week after missing out on the title with Hearts, the 16-goal forward is set to seal a deal that would see him move to Ibrox on a free transfer.

Given the go ahead by Scotland manager Steve Clarke, the striker will travel to Govan to complete the formalities on Tuesday, before joining up with the national team ahead of the World Cup.

Shankland has scored 88 times in 171 appearances for the Jambos, laying on 29 assists on the side.

With the 30-year-old set to complete his move this week, former Rangers man Boyd does not believe that the transfer work will stop there for Danny Rohl’s side.

With his release clause triggered, Shankland is set to move to Ibrox on a free transfer.

Signing a two-year deal with a further 12‑month option, the forward will be tasked by Rohl with guiding the Gers over the line as they chase their first title since 2021.

Speaking on The Scottish Sun’s Go Ballistic show, Boyd was full of praise for the deal.

“This is a huge signing,” he said. “This could end up being the biggest signing of the summer.

“I wouldn’t be surprised if Rangers go and add another one or two big signings, because they are going to have to.”

Asked whether he thinks it’s imperative that Scottish signings are added, Boyd said: “For me, I think Rangers had to add more to the squad.

“I think they had to get more Scottish players into the squad. Yes, Shankland will be a great addition on the pitch, but he could be an even bigger one off it.”

Rangers make big statement already after 2025-26 failure

After missing out on the title in such disappointing fashion, Rangers are in need of a reset over the summer.

After a scintillating run heading into the split, Rohl’s side put up what was anything but a title charge, with a run of four successive defeats knocking them out of contention.

While the dismal start to last season did not help, the Gers need to make a statement this summer to prove that they can go the distance in the battle at the top – this will be most definitely aided by Shankland’s experience and knowhow up top.

Getting the Shankland deal over the line before the World Cup is a big statement of intent from the Govan outfit.

By the time Rangers join up for pre-season, he will have the experienced striker in his ranks to prepare for the coming year, with a few others alongside him, if Boyd’s prediction is right.

This summer is a big one for Rangers, who have been so close yet so far in recent years.

However, Rohl does have a lot to prove ahead of the coming term, with the gutting end to the season sparking questions surrounding his future at the helm.
