Barry Ferguson ‘not surprised’ as Rangers already make transfer call behind the scenes

Barry Ferguson has shared his verdict on why Rangers have opted against signing Andreas Skov Olsen on a permanent basis this summer.

Skov Olsen joined the Gers on loan from Wolfsburg in the winter transfer window in what was considered a coup of sorts.

Rangers had a £9million option to buy the Denmark international upon the conclusion of the campaign had they wished.

That is not going to happen, however, and Skov Olsen will now return to his parent club after just seven Scottish Premiership starts.

And former Gers captain and caretaker manager Ferguson can understand why that transfer decision has been taken.

Andreas Skov Olsen unable to adapt to Scottish football

Rangers’ reported decision to not sign Skov Olsen permanently has hardly come as a surprise to those who watched him every week.

Danny Rohl was unable to get a song out of the winger and there was little chance of the Gers paying a rather substantial sum to land him permanently.

Skov Olsen contributed one goal and three assists in his nine league appearances which, while not exactly dreadful, is not the return of someone in the £9m price range.

And writing for the Daily Record, Ferguson says Skov Olsen’s failure is a lesson for chairman Andrew Cavenagh to learn from.

“Like many players from my own time who came into the squad with big reputations, Skov clearly struggled to adjust to the Scottish game in general and to the environment at Rangers in particular,” he said.

“Put it this way, it’s no surprise that the deal will not now be pushed through. But that’s another massive lesson for the chairman and his board.

“Not everyone is cut out to be a Rangers player, no matter how good they might look with a ball at their feet. Sometimes it’s almost more important what’s in the heart and in the head.”

Skov Olsen’s next career move is uncertain, with the attacker clearly also not fancied at Wolfsburg, with a move to his Danish homeland being one suggestion put forward.

Skov Olsen not only player to have left Rangers

It has been a busy week behind the scenes at Ibrox, as Leon King and Kieran Wright were both released upon the expiration of their contracts.

Both players have since penned emotional messages via social media after spending many years with the Glasgow giants.

While the summer transfer window is not yet open for business, Rohl and Rangers can use these next few weeks to whittle down the squad.

The German will already know which players are surplus to requirements and which areas in particular need strengthening.

For now, do not expect these to be the last of the goodbyes.
