Thelo Aasgaard shows why Rangers must persist with him as Ibrox potential clear
Thelo Aasgaard is one of the few Rangers players to come out of the Scottish Premiership run-in with any credit.
Rangers fans will be glad the 2025-26 book has now been closed, even if it didn’t have the ending they hoped it would.
It’s been a dismal few weeks for the Gers, with Danny Rohl‘s side inexplicably going on a four-game losing run to completely derail a once-promising title bid.
The 5-2 win over Falkirk did little to lift the mood around Ibrox, as a massive summer now awaits, with recruitment and a good pre-season vital.
However, Rangers’ win against the Bairns did serve to further shine a light on what has been a very encouraging end to Aasgaard’s debut campaign in Govan.

How strongly has Thelo Aasgaard ended the season for Rangers?
Aasgaard has struggled at times with Rangers this season, having arrived last summer from Luton Town for a fee worth a reported £3.5million.
Big things were expected of the 24-year-old upon signing for Gers, with the Norwegian international having shown his quality at both Wigan Athletic and Luton respectively.
| Aasgaard’s 25-26 league stats | Result |
| Chances created | 31 |
| Pass accuracy | 83.3% |
| Dribble success | 72.9% |
| Duels won | 58.8% |
| Average match rating | 7.2/10 |
But, there’s been times this season where he’s fallen out of favour with Rohl, particularly between early February to mid-March, during which he was an unused substitute in three separate games.
A talented player but one that frustrated as much as he dazzled the Ibrox faithful this season, Aasgaard needed a strong end to the season in order to really cement his place in the team for 2026-27.
That’s precisely what he’s done, registering five goal contributions in his final eight league appearances, providing three goals and two assists.

He converted from the penalty spot against Falkirk, and as per FotMob, also created two chances, completed two of his three long balls accurately as well registering an 89 per cent passing accuracy respectively.
In the 2-1 defeat to Hibernian, he picked out the top corner with a brilliant free-kick, and also created one chance, took five shots, completed 84 per cent of his passes and played two passes into the final third.
Aasgaard also performed well in the 3-2 defeat to Motherwell, and the Norwegian banked a three-game run of goal contributions against Aberdeen, Dundee United and Falkirk between 21 March to 12 April too.
Aasgaard should only get better for Rangers
Despite arriving for a sizeable fee and to much excitement, there was always going to be a strong likelihood that Aasgaard would require time and patience before he showed his best for Rangers.
Indeed, prior to joining Gers, the Norwegian had never played at a higher domestic level than English football’s second tier, doing so with Wigan in 2022-23 and for just the second half of last season with Luton respectively.
Rangers was a big step up, and his 48 total appearances in all competitions this term is a new individual season record for him as well, with his previous best being 44 with Wigan in 2022-23 respectively.
Yes, he does frustrate and leaving you wanting more at times, but Rangers fans and coaches alike should stick with Aasgaard, as this is an ascending player who could be a talismanic talent for many years to come.
