James Tavernier quits Rangers after bust-up with Danny Rohl

James Tavernier has shockingly quit Rangers after Danny Rohl left the club captain out of the starting lineup to face Hibernian on Wednesday.

According to the Scottish Sun, the long-time club captain has exited Gers after learning he was on the bench for the clash against Hibs, in a “sensational” behind-the-scenes verbal argument.

The match was supposed to be the right-back’s farewell at Ibrox after announcing he would depart the club at the end of the season.

Tavernier’s wife and kids were supposed to be in attendance for what should have been a wholesome and emotional moment for everyone connected with the club.

Rohl may have just ended his Rangers career with this decision, and there could be no way back following this news.

Danny Rohl could be sacked after the game

Tensions are already running high with Rohl after a 3-1 Old Firm derby defeat to Celtic, with the Bears’ pride already shot under the head coach.

One of the only things Gers fans had left to look forward to was seeing their beloved captain play one final game at home, but Rohl has stopped this.

Club officials were caught off guard by the news of his exit last month, and were allegedly prepared to hold further talks with the Englishman over his future.

Tavernier is not currently expected to be at the ground ahead of kick-off, and neither will his family be present.

The Englishman had an exchange with Rohl before speaking to his teammates and then “storming” out of Ibrox.

The Gers had planned for legend John Greig to give the skipper an official presentation on behalf of the club, but that will not be happening anymore.

Nobody would have expected the 34-year-old to be on the bench tonight, and that’s a decision purely made by Rohl, and one that could see him sacked after the game.

Tavernier was on the match programme

The game against Hibernian didn’t have much riding on it in terms of Rangers’ season, with the only real reason to watch it being for Tavernier’s Ibrox send-off.

The skipper was even on the match programme, in what was a game supposed to be for him.

Tavernier has given everything for the badge, and though his performances the last two seasons have tapered off, this is an incredibly sad end to one of the club’s biggest legends.

It will be interesting to see what the atmosphere at the ground will be like, and how the club handles the situation moving forward.

It feels like it could be the final push that the 49ers need to make a huge call.
