Rangers: Nasser Djiga could be reason for Danny Rohl sack as miss vs Celtic paints different picture

Rangers loanee Nasser Djiga missed a golden chance to put Gers ahead for a second time in the Old Firm derby defeat to Celtic, and Danny Rohl may pay the price.

The centre-back has seen his form fall flat in recent games, which has coincided with the Bears falling short of their Scottish Premiership title hopes.

Rohl made many questionable decisions in his starting lineup to face the Hoops, but the German head coach didn’t have much choice with Djiga’s inclusion.

There have been calls for Rangers to sign the 23-year-old on a permanent deal from Wolves following signs of great potential, but those same people may now backtrack on those claims.

Djiga missed a big chance against Celtic before the break, which could have changed the tide of the entire contest and would have possibly changed the perspective on Rohl.

Nasser Djiga may have just cost Danny Rohl his job

There is growing uncertainty around Rohl’s future, with many fans suggesting that the scar tissue is too great for the German to make a comeback at Ibrox.

The defeat to Celtic was the first time that Rangers have lost three league games in a row since 2000, when Dick Advocaat was in charge.

Djiga’s stats vs Celtic

Coming into the contest, Gers were aware that one of Celtic’s biggest weaknesses was from defending set-pieces.

That’s why when three chances came to Djiga in the match, he really let Rohl down with a poor 33 per cent accuracy in front of goal.

But it was the opportunity in the 43rd minute when James Tavernier’s in swinging free kick met the head of the defender inside the six-yard box, only for it to go over the bar.

Gers only missed one big chance in the contest, and it was through Djiga. If he had found the net with that chance, things could have looked different regarding Rohl.

But as it is, the German head coach looks indefensible and destined for the sack.

John Souttar return needed, and that’s worrying

Rangers have had a clear issue at the back recently, but Tuur Rommens looked like the standout from the backline at Celtic Park.

The Belgian’s absence in recent games has been shown, but even with his return, others like Tavernier and Djiga have let Rohl down.

John Souttar is no better, but it feels like he surely can’t have done any worse at the same time.

Even if the Scottish international did return, it probably wouldn’t change much, as Rohl is the man truly to blame for his own downfall at Ibrox.

Regardless of who is in the hot seat this summer, it will be interesting to see what the 49ers do regarding the defensive picture.
