Oliver Antman wouldn’t be upgrade on Andreas Skov Olsen if Rangers don’t trigger £8m option

Oliver Antman hasn’t done enough in his debut Rangers season to suggest he’d be an upgrade to Andreas Skov Olsen in the starting XI next season.

The 24-year-old winger joined Rangers last summer from Dutch Eredivisie side Go Ahead Eagles, and brought with him an exciting pedigree for goal contributions.

Indeed, he fired home six times and provided 16 assists in 36 total appearances last season, which was his best individual campaign of his career by some way.

As a result, there was significant excitement in Glasgow over his arrival, but things just haven’t quite worked out for him in Scotland just yet.

So, ahead of the summer transfer window, it remains to be seen whether Rangers feel confident that the Finland international will come good for them, or whether they may need to dip back into the market.

Oliver Antman and Andreas Skov Olsen’s stats compared

It hasn’t just been Antman who has endured an underwhelming start to life as a Rangers player, with Skov Olsen also suffering that same fate.

The 26-year-old was Rangers’ big headline signing of the January transfer window, joining on loan from German Bundesliga outfit Wolfsburg.

Having enjoyed some excellent years in Belgium with Club Brugge, scoring 49 times in 124 total appearances, the Danish international’s move to Wolfsburg hasn’t worked out.

Even so, his exploits in Belgium combined with his 40 caps for Denmark at international level had many believing he could a game-changing signing for Rangers.

Unfortunately, we’ve only seen his talent in flashes so far, and with Rangers holding a permanent option for Skov Olsen worth a reported fee of around £8million, he’s probably in need of a big final few games of the season.

Despite that, he has still posted largely stronger numbers than Antman in the Scottish Premiership this term, making a very strong argument for the Finn not being a viable starting replacement for the Dane if he doesn’t get a permanent deal.

As per Sofascore, Skov Olsen has 0.4 assists per game this season compared to Antman’s 0.2, whilst also creating four big chances to the latter’s two.

Skov Olsen’s dribble success rate of 62.5 per cent is also considerably better than Antman’s 39.3 per cent, as is his 63.3 per cent ground duels won as opposed to the Finns’ 41.4 per cent.

Antman’s passing accuracy of 89 per cent is slightly better than Skov Olsen’s 87 per cent though, but he does also play a fraction less key passes per game with 1.5 compared to the latter’s 1.6 respectively.

Antman may need Rangers position change if Skov Olsen signs

So, with the majority of his underlying stats being weaker than Skov Olsen’s, Antman could find himself in a bit of bother when it comes to carving out a starting role for Rangers if the Club do trigger the Danes’ permanent option.

As frustrating as Skov Olsen’s start has been, he has still offered more than what Antman has been able to over the course of the full campaign, and that doesn’t bode well for his long-term prospects on the right.

Meanwhile, Gers are also strong down the left, with the likes of Mikey Moore, Djeidi Gassama and Thelo Aasgaard and Nedim Bajrami respectively.

Therefore, transitioning into more of an attacking midfielder could be his best bet to more regular starting opportunities at Ibrox, otherwise the competition elsewhere across the forward line looks too fierce.
