Youssef Chermiti can be criticised for Rangers woes but attitude talk is bang out of order

Rangers legend Craig Moore has brutally ripped into Youssef Chermiti for showing too much “swagger” during games, telling him: “You’ve won nothing yet.”

While the striker has scored nine goals since joining from Everton in an £9million deal during the summer, he remains frustratingly inconsistent and is yet to fully win over supporters.

Indeed, he has not netted since his superb double against Celtic in March’s Old Firm draw, while his performances have more often than not left much to be desired.

Danny Rohl opted to bench him for the 4-2 victory against Dundee United last time out, but the ace was not missed despite notching an assist for Bojan Miovski’s late strike.

Rangers will look for a new striker during the summer transfer window, leaving Chermiti’s future hanging in the balance. However, some of the criticism directed at him is out of order.

The latest breaking news on signings, departures, and Danny Röhl’s primary targets.

What has Craig Moore said about Youssef Chermiti?

It’s fair to say that, by and large, Chermiti’s big-money switch to Ibrox hasn’t paid off. Every time he has hinted at making steady progress, he has taken two steps back instead.

The clock is therefore ticking, and Rohl certainly can’t be impressed.

Moore, speaking on Go Radio, delivered a withering verdict on the 21-year-old, believing that Miovski, regardless of his fringe role, is actually a better finisher.

But he then unfairly turned his attention to Chermiti’s attitude during matches.

“One thing I picked up when I’ve watched Rangers at home to Aberdeen about Chermiti, there’s a little bit of a swagger there,” said Moore. “In a good way? No, not for me.

“Swagger can be good, but swagger needs to be earned. He’s still a boy, he’s still 21-years-old. You’ve still got so much to do in your career, son.”

While Chermiti’s displays are rightly in question, his so-called “swagger” is certainly not an issue. If anything, he has worked admirably to improve his all-round game, and it’s paid off.

The ace has kept his head down despite his slump and played his part this season. Should Rangers win the title, he will have contributed and would therefore deserve credit.

Here’s what Chermiti should focus on next

Now, Chermiti would do well to sharpen up in front of goal. He has dazzled in fits and starts, but Rohl is still unable to hang his hat on him. That won’t be good enough next season.

With the summer transfer window rapidly approaching, the 49ers will also have to make a speedy decision over whether the frontman has a future in Govan.

They may be tempted to cash in, despite Rangers rejecting a £13m bid from Fenerbahce for Chermiti in January. Surely now his valuation would have risen to around £20m.

All Chermiti can do to quieten the noise is perform consistently until the end of the campaign. The only trouble is that that has been his biggest failing at Ibrox.
