Thelo Aasgaard could seal Andreas Skov Olsen’s Rangers fate as Danny Rohl finds wide role for him
Thelo Aasgaard played well as a right-winger upon his return to the Rangers team against Aberdeen, and that could spell danger for Andreas Skov Olsen’s future.
Danny Rohl had Aasgaard largely outcast from his team since early February when Aberdeen came to Ibrox on 21 March, after one too many inconsistent performances.
The 23-year-old was one of Rangers’ headline signings of this season’s summer transfer window, joining from Luton Town who he’d only spent half of last season with before making the move to Glasgow.
A six-cap Norwegian international, Aasgaard was on track to be one of the big disappointments of Gers’ 2025-26 season, but his re-introduction to the team on the right flank saw him put in an encouraging display.
Skov Olsen wasn’t even in the matchday squad against Aberdeen, and the January transfer window arrival will surely have been concerned by what he saw from Aasgaard in regard to his own Ibrox future.
🚨 RANGERS TRANSFER UPDATE 🚨
The latest breaking news on signings, departures, and Danny Röhl’s primary targets.
Thelo Aasgaard could cost Andreas Skov Olsen a Rangers deal
Rangers have the option to buy Skov Olsen on a permanent basis from Wolfsburg this summer, with the reported figure sitting around the £8million mark.
Similarly to Aasgaard, many Gers fans expected the 26-year-old to come in and immediately establish himself as a key player in the team, but that’s not happened for him so far.
| Andreas Skov Olsen profile | Result |
| Date of birth | 29 Dec, 1999 (26) |
| Place of birth | Hillerod, Denmark |
| Date of senior debut | 23 July, 2017 |
| Age at time of senior debut | 17 |
| Club he made his senior debut for | FC Nordsjælland |
He arrived in Glasgow with a big reputation for goals and creativity, with him netting 49 times and providing 30 assists in 124 games for Club Brugge prior to joining Wolfsburg.
Skov Olsen has also been capped 40 times for Denmark at senior international level, but unfortunately, we’ve only really seen the quality that sort of pedigree suggests he has in flashes.

Flashes of his talent aren’t going to be enough to get Rangers chiefs to commit to triggering his hefty purchase option, and now he’s got the re-emergence of Aasgaard to contend with as well.
Aasgaard grabbed an assist in the 4-1 win over Aberdeen whilst deployed as a right-winger, having previously operated through the middle with Rangers, and indeed, across most of his career to date.
So, whilst it wasn’t a headline-grabbing display, it was a start and an improvement for Aasgaard, and it may have done enough for him to retain that spot in Rohl’s starting lineup against Dundee United on Saturday.
Rangers shouldn’t sign Skov Olsen based on current evidence
£8million would be a lot of money to splash on one player for Rangers, let alone one in Skov Olsen who has only been a moments player in Glasgow so far.
On top of that, splurging that amount of cash on a right-winger doesn’t feel like a particularly wise move for the Gers right now, as there are more pressing needs to address in defence in particular.
They’ve also still got the likes of Djeidi Gassama, Oliver Antman, Ryan Naderi and Nedim Bajrami respectively who can all play on the right.
So, if Skov Olsen wants to win a permanent stay at Ibrox, then he’s surely going to have to enjoy an inspired final few weeks of the campaign.
