Rangers may regret Robbie Fraser sale as defender enjoys impressive Dunfermline season

Rangers sold defender Robbie Fraser to Dunfermline Athletic in this season’s summer window: a decision they may live to regret after his eye-catching debut campaign.

It was announced in mid-August 2025 that Fraser would be leaving Rangers on a permanent basis, penning a deal with Scottish Championship side Dunfermline Athletic.

The 22-year-old left wing-back is a product of Gers’ academy system, having joined the youth system at Ibrox back in 2010 as a seven-year-old.

Fraser would make his Rangers first-team debut on 14 May 2024, appearing in a 5-2 home win over Dundee, and not long after that, would ink a new contract extension until 2026.

However, he would go on to make just five more competitive senior appearances for Rangers, before making his permanent transfer to Dunfermline last August.

The latest breaking news on signings, departures, and Danny Röhl’s primary targets.

How has Robbie Fraser performed for Dunfermline Athletic?

Fraser hoped to benefit from Borna Barisic’s exit in the summer of 2024, as his departure looked set to open the door for the youngster to carve out a bigger role at Ibrox on the left of the Gers defence.

However, that wouldn’t prove to be the case for him, and instead, he spent the second half of the 2024-25 season on loan with Livingston.

That stint saw him help Livi win promotion to the Scottish Premiership, with one goal and one assist from 16 Championship appearances.

And, his return to Scotland’s second tier with Dunfermline this season has seen him blossom into one of the best in his position in that division, and could yet help Neil Lennon’s side win promotion to the Scottish Premiership.

Starting 25 of his 27 league appearances with one goal and six assists to his name, Fraser’s Pars side sit fourth in the table, and are hoping to secure a promotion play-off place.

As per Sofascore, Fraser has averaged 1.4 key passes per game this season, whilst also recording a very impressive 40 per cent cross accuracy rate and 9.3 balls recovered per game.

He’s also registered a staggering 87 per cent dribble success rate this term, as well as winning 58 per cent of his aerial duels.

Rangers do have Tuur Rommens silver lining from Fraser sale

So, there’s every chance that Fraser could be turning out against Rangers in the Scottish Premiership next season with Dunfermline.

Even if he isn’t, his form and performances in the second tier, should they continue, will surely see a top flight side snap him up in the near future.

As such, Rangers must be feeling as though they’ve let one slip the net here, but they do have a Tuur Rommens-sized silver lining to soften the blow.

Indeed, the Belgian has been superb since arriving at Ibrox this winter, and had Fraser still been with Gers this season and was replicating his Dunfermline form, perhaps he may well never have been signed.

Overall though, many inside Rangers will be delighted to see one of their own shining, but they must be pondering what could’ve been for Fraser in Glasgow.
