Chris Sutton fears for ‘next Aaron Ramsey’ as agreement reached away from Rangers
Chris Sutton has used Aaron Ramsey’s spell at Rangers as a terrible transfer example.
Ramsey missed the penalty that helped lose the Europa League final, something which he is said to still be guilty about.
That moment summed up his campaign at Ibrox, with Ramsey representing one of the worst Rangers signings in recent years.
It says a lot that Ramsey went on to join Championship side Cardiff City with a failed season at OGC Nice in between that and his Govan stint.
Ramsey now finds himself being used as a stick to beat other potential signings, with Sutton the latest to refer back to the Welshman.
Alex Oxlade-Chamberlain compared to Aaron Ramsey at Rangers
Ramsey was highly rated when Rangers signed him and there was a genuine feeling that he could take the Light Blues to the next level.
It can be said that with Giovanni van Bronckhorst’s side reaching a Europa League final, he featured in a side that achieved big things.
With 13 appearances and four goal involvements in Govan, it would be unfair to suggest the former Wales international played a big role in that success.

The midfielder did come in as a big name after his Arsenal days, and it is a similar story for Alex Oxlade-Chamberlain.
It looks as if the 32-year-old is on his way to Celtic, with Sky Sports journalist Anthony Joseph reporting that the Englishman is closing in on a move to Parkhead.
Chris Sutton has been left concerned by a potential deal in his latest Daily Record column, where he has moved to compare the imminent free transfer to that of Ramsey at Ibrox.
He said: “Alex Oxlade-Chamberlain is another one with question marks. He’s been an outstanding player over the years, and it could be an inspired signing. But it’s a big if, given he’s not played for so long.
“There have been plenty of big names who have come to Scotland late in their career and not cut it. I remember when Juninho joined Celtic, and he was a shadow of the player who lit up the Premier League with Middlesbrough.
“There’s been countless others. You only have to look across the city at a recent one, with Aaron Ramsay’s underwhelming spell at Rangers.“
Oxlade-Chamberlain set to join Celtic
The January transfer window may be over, but that isn’t stopping the Hoops from conducting late transfer business on the free agent market.
There are various stars who are currently without a contract, but it looks as if Oxlade-Chamberlain has earned a move to Celtic Park.
Current free agents:
- Raheem Sterling
- Kurt Zouma
- Jesse Lingard
- Dele Alli
- Juan Bernat
- Nathan Redmond
It will certainly be interesting to see how soon this deal goes through and whether the former Liverpool star will hit the ground running in the Scottish Premiership.
Sutton is unsure right now and there will certainly be hope from Ibrox that he follows in the footsteps of Ramsey at their Old Firm rivals.
