Rangers attacker hours from exit as medical set overseas, only ‘unforeseen circumstances’ stand in way
Danny Rohl is hoping things will start moving on the Rangers transfer front imminently.
Rangers are yet to conduct any transfer business this month, as Rohl looks to bolster his team with new recruits ASAP.
The Gers made it four wins on the bounce on Tuesday night, as Rohl’s side beat Aberdeen 2-0, closing the gap to Hearts to just three points.
However, nobody inside Ibrox will be resting on their laurels, as Rangers‘ squad remains thin for strength in depth in some key areas, which could present a major problem over the second half of the season if reinforcements don’t arrive in the next couple of weeks.
Rangers issued Oscar Cortes exit update
Most of the current transfer talk coming out of the blue side of Glasgow is centred around incomings, with Rangers promised additions in central midfield and at left-back.
However, clearing deadwood and sourcing moves for young players will be an important point of order to address this month too, as Andrew Cavenagh and the 49ers Enterprises look to navigate the winter sales in shrewd fashion.
Oscar Cortes looks set to leave Rangers in the coming hours, as the Colombian winger has already reportedly said goodbye to his Sporting Gijon teammates, who he’s been on loan with for the first half of this season.
And, in a fresh update from Argentina-based journalist Ariel Fernandez via X, Cortes is now expected to undergo a medical with Argentinian outfit Huracan.
Fernandez reports that barring any last-minute, “unforeseen circumstances” arising, the deal will be completed soon.
Rangers left with little choice on Cortes
Having signed for Rangers on an initial loan deal in February 2024, Cortes then completed another loan move to Ibrox for the 2024-25 season which included an obligation for the Gers to purchase him from Lens.
That fee was understood to have been around £4.5million, meaning it wasn’t a cheap deal by any means, and Rangers evidently felt that he could develop into a real star at Ibrox.
However, the 22-year-old just hasn’t been able to show consistent production levels in Glasgow, despite some flashes of that potential that displayed why Rangers chiefs splashed out on him.
- Cortes has been capped at senior international level by Colombia
- He’s also been capped 14 times for Colombia’s Under-20s, scoring seven goals and providing two assists
- Cortes has made 21 total appearances for Rangers, scoring once and registering two assists
But, in five appearances in Spain’s second division this season, Cortes has failed to provide a single goal or assist, and has endured the same fate in three Copa del Rey outings too, but has played just 119 minutes of league football for Gijon.
Argentina’s season gets underway on 22 January, and Cortes will be hoping that Huracan will provide him with the opportunity to really start kicking on.
