Rangers terminate Oscar Cortes deal as next club lined up, permanent move pre-agreed
Oscar Cortes’ loan at Sporting Gijon has reportedly been terminated by Rangers.
The 22-year-old winger joined Gijon on loan in September, but has made just eight appearances in all competitions for the La Liga 2 club.
Rangers signed Cortes for £4.5million last summer after an initial spell on loan at Ibrox from Lens, but despite the huge transfer fee involved in his permanent move to Scotland, the Colombian has been out of the picture.
He played just twice for Russell Martin at the beginning of the 2025-26 campaign, and it seems he’s not in Danny Rohl‘s plans either, with a new move already lined up for the one-time Colombia international.
Huracan to sign Oscar Cortes as new loan details revealed
According to Argentine journalist Cesar Luis Merlo, Cortes is signing for Club Atletico Huracan.
It is understood that the Argentinean Primera Division club is signing the Rangers winger on a one-year loan, which includes the option to make the deal permanent.
Huracan’s league season begins later in January, meaning that he could join the Buenos Aires club on a full-time basis later in 2026.
Cortes’ move is likely forced by the fact he’s already played for two clubs in the 2025-26 season after appearing in Rangers’ Champions League qualifying defeat to Viktoria Plzen and their Scottish Premiership draw with Mothwell in August.
He could have returned to Ibrox, but it was reported in December that Cortes has no intention of playing for Rangers again this season.
Although he was on the fringes at Gijon, Cortes still started one in the Spanish second tier, and even completed 90 minutes against Valencia in the Copa Del Rey last month.

As a result, FIFA’s rules mean that Cortes can only play again for a club starting a new season in 2026, like Huracan in Argentina.
What’s the best-case scenario now with Cortes?
Rangers will ultimately be praying that Cortes plays a helluva lot more in Argentina than he did in Spain.
Hopefully, a return to South America for the former Millionairos winger will spark some life back into what has been a stalling career in Europe.
Since his 2023 move to French club Lens, Cortes has played just 33 times in senior football across all competitions.
Cortes has had his injury issues at Rangers, but he’s ultimately never been worth anywhere near the £4.5m that was spent on him in the summer, thanks to an obligation-to-buy clause in his last loan deal.
Rangers now need to hope he does well at Huracan and boosts his transfer value to the point that he can be solid without having too much of a loss.
