Elliot Watt’s old social media post about Rangers resurfaces as Danny Rohl lines up January deal
Rangers are looking to add to their midfield options in the January transfer window.
Although it’s been a difficult campaign for the Gers, Danny Rohl has managed to oversee an upturn in the side’s form that sees them now firmly back in the Scottish Premiership title race ahead of this Saturday’s Old Firm showdown with Celtic at Parkhead.
However, while there have been improvements, it would be criminal for Rohl and the staff at Ibrox to sleepwalk through the January transfer window now that it’s open.
Thankfully, that doesn’t seem to be the case, with Rangers now showing an interest in Motherwell’s defensive midfielder Elliot Watt.
Elliot Watt has Rangers history as Danny Rohl eyes up swoop
The Scottish Sun has reported that Rohl admires the 25-year-old, who has enjoyed a standout season with Motherwell.
He’s made 27 appearances in all competitions for the Steelmen after joining them from Burton Albion in the summer, scoring three goals and supplying two assists, with one of those goals coming in his side’s 2-0 win over Celtic on Tuesday.
While that goal against Wilfried Nancy‘s side will have already shone him in a good light to Rangers fans, an old post on X has surfaced that will endear Watt towards the Ibrox faithful even more.
| Club | Years | Appearances | Goals |
| Wolves | 2016-18 | 1 | 0 |
| Carlisle (loan) | 2020 | 14 | 1 |
| Bradford | 2020-22 | 96 | 5 |
| Salford | 2022-24 | 91 | 1 |
| Burton | 2024-25 | 30 | 1 |
| St Johnstone (loan) | 2025 | 9 | 2 |
| Motherwell | 2025-present | 27 | 3 |
Light Blues social media sleuths have uncovered a post from Watt from April 2016, when he said: “Come on the Rangers.”
Watt would have only been 15 years old at the time, but he was posting on the day of Rangers’ Scottish Cup semi-final victory over Celtic at Hampden Park in the 2015-16 campaign.
Rangers were a Scottish Championship club at the time but managed to draw 2-2 with Celtic after extra time, thanks to goals by Kenny Miller and Barrie McKay, before winning 5-4 on penalties.

Is Watt a replacement for Nicolas Raskin?
Raskin has been linked with a move away from Rangers for some time now.
It’s no surprise – he’s a Belgium international who reportedly has suitors in major leagues across Europe and if silverware isn’t a guarantee at Ibrox, what’s the point of him staying there longer than he needs to?
Watt plays a deep role in the midfield, like Raskin, but the two players’ heatmaps this season suggest that the Gers midfielder has more freedom to roam in his role.

However, Watt outperforms Raskin in almost every category and the ones where he doesn’t outperform him are only minor differences.
Stats by Sofascore suggest that he could fill Raskin’s boots.
However, stepping up from the lower reaches of the English Football League to a club like Rangers, via St Johnstone and Motherwell, could be a big ask.
