Andrew Cavenagh has to fix one spectacular Rangers problem after frightening £75,000-a-week reveal
Andrew Cavenagh and 49ers Enterprises have to get recruitment right at Rangers in the upcoming transfer windows.
Kevin Thelwell was prematurely sacked at Ibrox after overseeing abysmal recruitment in the summer.
The Gers’ former sporting director signed 12 players under the new ownership with an approximate net spend of £20million, but it’s safe to say most of his decisions have backfired.
With another squad rebuild on the horizon at the Light Blues, Cavenagh is expected to back Rohl, but there might be a stark reminder for him still at the club regarding failed deals that can’t be repeated.

Rabbi Matondo, Kieran Dowell and Jose Cifuentes forgotten at Rangers
Jonny McFarlane has shared the “frightening” reality of Rabbi Matondo, Kieran Dowell and Jose Cifuentes still being on the Gers’ books.
The journalist claimed that the trio earned a combined £75,000 a week in wages at Ibrox, and their transfers are remnants of the Light Blues’ past recruitment failures.
If Cavenagh wants to make the most out of his investment in the Glaswegian outfit, then getting signings right has to be a priority for them.
Speaking on the Rangers Review on 25 December, McFarlane said, “I’d forgotten about Matondo, Dowell and Cifuentes, and who else hasn’t? Between those three, you’re probably talking about the best part of £75,000 a week in wages. That’s frightening, actually. Again, it shows you that when you don’t get recruitment right, it comes back to bite you.”
The journalist added, “And Rangers have got recruitment spectacularly wrong for so long, it’s the number one thing the club needs to fix if Cavenagh wants to ensure his money is being spent wisely.”
Oscar Cortes’s uncertain future at Sporting Gijon will surely be another worry for the Gers, leaving the current hierarchy with plenty to think about.
Kevin Thelwell signing already on his way out of Ibrox
Joe Rothwell is being linked with a move to Sheffield United, with other teams down south keeping an eye on his situation in G51.
Rangers also arguably made some poor loan additions in the summer, with Nasser Djiga and Max Aarons not consistent enough to warrant their continued presence in Govan.
| Players | Transfer fee |
| Youssef Chermiti | £8m |
| Oliver Antman | £3.5m |
| Thelo Aasgaard | £3.5m |
| Bojan Miovski | £2.6m |
| Emmanuel Fernandez | £2.5m |
Youssef Chermiti is another remnant of Thelwell’s mountain of mistakes at the Light Blues, and it will be interesting to see what the future holds for him at Ibrox.
Djeidi Gassama, Jayden Meghoma and Mikey Moore are probably the only decent players the former sporting director signed at the Glaswegian outfit, and the rest surely need moving on.
