‘Rangers deal was practically done for Hibernian machine now wanted in Premier League’

Josh Mulligan should be a Rangers player, according to Billy Dodds.

Rangers came close to signing Mulligan in the summer transfer window after his contract at Dundee expired.

However, despite reports of a medical being done in Glasgow, the 23-year-old midfielder ended up joining Hibernian.

Ex-Hibs midfielder Stephen McGinn tipped Mulligan to join Rangers or Celtic in the summer, while Paul Slane has recently suggested Kevin Thelwell dropped a clanger by not getting a deal over the line.

And now, after seeing him start well at Easter Road, former Rangers striker Dodds expressed dismay at the Gers not getting a deal over the line for the versatile Hibs star.

‘Josh Mulligan should be a Rangers player’

Rangers won 1-0 against Hibernian at Ibrox in the Scottish Premiership on Monday, with Sofascore‘s stats suggesting that Mulligan struggled on the night.

Ahead of that game, where the Light Blues moved up to third in the table, Dodds raved about Mulligan, adding that the ex-Scotland Under-21s international is now a target for Premier League clubs ahead of the January transfer window.

“Mulligan should have been at Ibrox, let’s be honest,” Dodds said on BBC Sportsound on Monday night ahead of Rangers’ narrow victory over Hibs.

“The deal was practically done, but Rangers walked away from it, and you see now there are reports that there’s going to be English Premier League interest.

“I’m not surprised because the boy’s a machine.

“He’s got technical ability, but that’s not his main strength; that’s his physicality.

It’s his pace, his strength and his strength is fantastic at times.”

Premier League interest in Josh Mulligan

French news outlet Foot Mercato reported last week that Leeds and Nottingham Forest are both keen on signing Mulligan in the winter.

Lille and Wolfsburg are also reportedly admirers in continental Europe, with Sebastien Denis reporting that those interested parties have been blown away by the midfielder’s “meteoric rise” in Edinburgh.

It’s no shock to see clubs lining up Mulligan.

Josh Mulligan factfile:

Not only is he young and potentially available for a rather modest fee by Premier League standards, but he’s also extremely versatile.

This season, the ex-Dundee star has played as a right-back, right-winger, defensive midfielder, central midfielder and as a number 10.

Rangers could have got themselves a long-term replacement for James Tavernier if they didn’t have someone completely useless in charge of transfers over the summer.

It’s yet another sign that this is a football club that seems to do everything in its power to regress.
