Kevin Thelwell mistake will come back to haunt as Rangers snub ‘best business of summer’
Rangers may regret appointing Kevin Thelwell as their sporting director as they face Hibernian in the William Hill Premiership on Monday.
Danny Rohl beat Hibs early on in the season at Easter Road, and the Gers are now set to host David Gray’s team at home on 15 December.
The Light Blues have seen a resurgence domestically in recent weeks, but their away form has been abysmal after losing again in the Europa League to Ferencvaros in Budapest on 11 December.
Rohl is still trying to undo the damage done by Russell Martin, and Thelwell was undoubtedly part of the crisis at the Glaswegian outfit.

Rangers questioned for not pursuing Josh Mulligan transfer
Josh Mulligan was being linked with a move to Ibrox, but the midfielder ended up joining Hibs instead.
The 23-year-old is now enjoying a brilliant spell at Easter Road, with Tam McManus branding him possibly the best signing of the summer in Scotland.
On the other hand, former Scottish midfielder Paul Slane can’t believe the Light Blues didn’t make a move for the former Dundee star, who may now come back to haunt them at Ibrox.
McManus wrote in the Daily Record on 12 December: “Mulligan yet again showed that he is probably the best business done by any club in the summer with another terrific display in the middle of the park.”
On the other hand, speaking on Open Goal on 11 December, Slane said: “What are Rangers doing there, mate, not getting him in the summer? Honestly.”
There were claims that Mulligan had undergone a medical in Govan, but it looks like Thelwell’s arrival probably scuppered that deal.
Andrew Cavenagh has set back Ibrox development by years with one appointment
It will arguably take years to fix the mess Thelwell has left at Ibrox, with the former sporting director’s recruitment strategy baffling.
Rangers signed nine players from down south in the summer, and it’s safe to say most of them haven’t worked out.
Of the 12 players Thelwell brought to the Light Blues, Djeidi Gassama, Jayden Meghoma and Mikey Moore are the only ones who have lived up to expectations so far.
With a squad overhaul clearly needed at Ibrox, the ex-Everton chief undoubtedly set the Glaswegian outfit back, and it will take time to build a competitive team in G51.
