Andrew Cavenagh to pay the price as Kevin Thelwell damage set to take years to reverse at Rangers

Kevin Thelwell is certainly villain number one at Rangers as things continue to go downhill under the ownership of Andrew Cavenagh and 49ers Enterprises.

The former Everton chief was appointed the new sporting director at the Gers in the summer, but his recruitment drive has been heavily criticised.

Russell Martin lasted just 123 days at Ibrox, with Thelwell heavily backing the Scottish manager in the previous transfer window.

Danny Rohl saw the reality of his current squad against Roma in the Europa League on 6 November, raising questions about the sporting director’s tenure at the Glaswegian outfit, but it seems like the US consortium have complete faith in him.

Rangers set for another Kevin Thelwell-linked hire in David Harrison

David Harrison could potentially reunite with Thelwell at the Gers, with the search for a new director of football operations ongoing, according to the Scottish Daily Express.

The news outlet reported on 10 November that the former Everton and Manchester United chief is the frontrunner for the Ibrox post.

With technical director Dan Purdy, head scout Nathan Fisher, head of recruitment Robbie Thelwell and academy director Jonathan Hunter-Barrett also previously working with the Light Blues sporting director, his fingerprints seem to be all over the new hires.

It’s not like Thelwell has lit up G51 with the work he’s done so far, and Cavenagh is arguably taking a gamble by putting such immense faith in him.

It wouldn’t be surprising to see Thelwell getting the sack at Ibrox sooner rather than later, with fans on his and Patrick Stewart’s backs.

If and when the Everton chief is dismissed at the Glaswegian outfit, it will undoubtedly take years to reverse the damage he’s done, with his influence highlighted by the recent backroom hires.

Kevin Thelwell just a symptom of what’s wrong at Ibrox

Cavenagh and the 49ers have undoubtedly been put to shame by Tony Bloom at Hearts, with the Brighton chief showing the Americans how things are done after acquiring a minority stake in the Scottish club in the summer.

The Seagulls’ chairman has put the Rangers recruitment to shame, with his flagship Jamestown Analytics producing immense results at Tynecastle Park.

Graeme Jones has quickly turned into a popular figure at the Edinburgh outfit, all thanks to Bloom, with Hearts’ sporting director initially coming under criticism after being appointed in 2024.

Similarly, it can be argued that the cause of the Glaswegian outfit’s woes is the American ownership, and Thelwell is just a scapegoat.
