Rangers save themselves millions as 49ers get hands-on over John Souttar exit

Rangers are in talks with John Souttar’s representatives over a new deal for John Souttar, with 49ers Enterprises getting involved.

Souttar’s Rangers future has been in doubt with his current deal set to expire at the end of the 2025-26 season.

Scotland international Souttar is currently nursing an injury that has kept him sidelined for the past month.

According to the Daily Record on 8 December, Souttar has now been offered fresh terms to stay on beyond this season.

Details emerge on new John Souttar contract

Danny Rohl may well have thought a Souttar replacement was needed for beyond this season, but that may no longer be the case.

The same report suggests that Souttar’s contract will tie him down at Ibrox until 2028, at which point he turns 32.

This will therefore be a big commitment for Souttar, who admitted in April that he had put talk of his future on the backburner for the time being.

Souttar cannot delay the decision forever, though, with Rangers having to prepare for next season even if we are only in December.

The deal tabled for Souttar is said to be a significant upgrade on his current salary.

49ers move on from Kevin Thelwell as Souttar talks progress

49ers Enterprises are said to have given their input in the Souttar contract talks, which started when Kevin Thelwell was at Ibrox before understandably coming to a halt.

Thelwell was sacked by Rangers last month and it shows that transfer activity is very much still ongoing behind the scenes regardless.

49ers clearly see the value in keeping Souttar at the club for the long-term, even if it means not losing any money by losing him for free next summer.

Finding a replacement of similar quality, who would then need to adapt, would set Rangers back millions.

That’s money that will be freed up by simply tying Souttar down, assuming he wants to commit.

Now is the perfect time for these talks with Souttar on the sidelines, and hopefully a decision is made soon.
