Barry Ferguson shares what Andrew Cavenagh will do in January to bolster Rangers

Barry Ferguson has urged Rangers to act quickly in the January transfer window as they fall further behind in the Scottish Premiership title race.

After Rangers drew 2-2 with Dundee United on Wednesday, they sit nine points behind both Hearts and rivals Celtic, and there is little hope that the team can compete for the league without more additions.

Rangers signed 14 players in the summer, although the majority of them have been incredibly underwhelming despite being brought in for large transfer fees.

Rangers chairman Andrew Cavenagh has come under scrutiny, and there is no doubt that he needs to get the Rangers fans believing in the process as soon as possible.

January marks an opportunity for the Bears to add much-needed quality to their team, and Ferguson believes that three or four additions are imperative for Danny Rohl’s side.

Rangers need three or four starters to boost title hopes

Cavenagh dismissed Kevin Thelwell and Patrick Stewart on 24 November, and it’s clear that a different approach is needed when it comes to recruitment.

Speaking on The Go Radio Football Show Podcast on 5 December, Ferguson made it clear that Cavenagh will definitely back Rohl to sign the players he needs.

He said: “You can never give up in the title race. Cavenagh will back Rohl with three or four players in January, and it’s desperately needed.

“I think the three or four players they bring in have to go into the starting lineup. I don’t think anyone needs to be sold, although they’ll probably sell players that are surplus to requirements.”

Thelo Aasgaard£3.5m
Emmanuel Fernandez£3.5m
Oliver Antman£3m
Bojan Miovski£2.6m – could rise to £4.2m
Thelwell’s most expensive signings at Rangers

With Thelwell no longer in charge, the recruitment will undoubtedly improve, and January represents the perfect opportunity for Rohl to start implementing changes to his squad.

The nine-point gap is quite worrying, although with the right additions, it is definitely something that can be made up in the latter stages of the campaign.

It’s clear that the results have been disappointing throughout the season, and Rohl certainly needs some help as Rangers hit a blip in form.

After recording four successive league wins, the Bears have disappointingly dropped points against Falkirk and Dundee United, and it could prove to be incredibly costly by May.

Why December could prove to be Rangers’ most important month

Draws have been their kryptonite, with eight of Rangers’ matches ending in stalemates.

In a month that saw Rangers face neither Celtic, Hearts, nor Hibernian, it represented a perfect opportunity to close in on the teams at the top.

With Celtic and Hearts facing each other on Sunday, the Light Blues can’t afford to drop points in their match against Kilmarnock at Ibrox, or they risk falling too far behind the league’s pacesetters.

The festive period will also highlight which players are up to the demands of Scottish football, and it’s clear that the likes of Youssef Chermiti and Bojan Miovski have struggled since arriving in the summer.

Rohl surely has a good understanding of what is needed in January, and it’s imperative that Cavenagh gets this transfer window spot on.
