‘What Andrew Cavenagh has done at Rangers might look like corporate negligence’
Hugh Keevins has criticised Andrew Cavenagh and the Rangers board for their poor decisions and dismissals this season.
On Monday, Rangers announced their decision to fire Patrick Stewart and Kevin Thelwell after failing to convince Cavenagh and the 49ers that they were the right men to take the Gers forward.
This hasn’t been the only sacking this season, of course, with Cavenagh axing Russell Martin shortly after his appointment in the summer.
There have been protests outside of Ibrox in recent months, with anger having been directed at all three of Martin, Thelwell, and Stewart, showcasing Cavenagh’s misjudgement of hirings.
Keevins has now suggested that Cavenagh and Co. may be responsible for “corporate negligence” in Rangers’ poor start to the season, not just the men who have been fired.

Hugh Keevins says that Andrew Cavenagh has been ‘careless’
Danny Rohl has lifted the mood at Rangers, with signs of promise and progression evident in performances since the German took charge.
Rangers are preparing to make sales in January after it was suggested that Rohl was left unimpressed by the summer signings made by Thelwell.
- Rangers are in the process of replacing Thelwell and Stewart
- It took the Gers 17 days to appoint Martin’s successor in Rohl
- Rangers may still fire Thelwell’s son, Robbie, who is the head of first-team recruitment
In the Sunday Mail’s print edition (30 November), journalist Keevins has highlighted Cavenagh and the 49ers’ “careless” decisions this campaign, suggesting they reflect the consequences of their own appointments.
Keevins wrote: “To appoint, then sack, a manager is careless.
“To jettison a CEO and a director of football as well might look like corporate negligence unless you remove the problem of guilt by association before somebody points the finger of blame at you.”

While many Gers fans will have been delighted to see the back of the trio, more doubt will be cast on Cavenagh and Paraag Marathe’s names.
Rangers’ next hirings could make or break support for 49ers
It looks like Rangers got it bang on with the appointment of Rohl, but he also seemed like the Bears’ third choice.
The Gers failed in their attempts to bring Steven Gerrard back to Glasgow, with Kevin Muscat also turning his nose up at an Ibrox return.
Thankfully for the 49ers, they fell upwards with the hiring of Rohl, which puts even more pressure on them to make their next decisions count.
Whoever Rangers bring in to replace Thelwell and Stewart will be looked at under a microscope by supporters, and rightly so.
It could truly be the start of a relationship between Gers fans and the 49ers, but one bad move could make things toxic all over again.
