Rangers have obvious candidate to replace Kevin Thelwell, it’d be a seismic appointment

Kevin Thelwell’s Rangers departure has left the door open for another appointment at Rangers.

While Danny Rohl has improved things on the pitch for Rangers, it is still as disjointed off of it as it has been for months.

Thelwell departed Ibrox over the weekend, having only made the move to Glasgow in April, showcasing just how abd his tenure really was.

However, as always with these kinds of roles, Thelwell needs to be replaced, and Rangers have a clear route to chase to address that.

David Weir makes too much sense to ignore for Rangers

Rangers were on the lookout for a new sporting director at the start of the year, and that ultimately led them to Thelwell.

However, David Weir was also backed for the job at Ibrox, having spent several years in a similar role in the Premier League.

Weir is a legend in Glasgow, having spent five years at Rangers as a player, and knows the club inside out, which is arguably going to be one of the most important factors behind the next hire.

Not only that, but Weir, throughout his time in England, will have built up some incredible contacts that could be used to the Light Blues’ advantage from a recruitment perspective.

Rangers

Under the 49ers, Rangers are seemingly looking to become more data-driven, and the 55-year-old has been successful in roles trying to execute that plan.

Added to that, he would arrive at Rangers with a positive reputation, which would boost the confidence levels at Ibrox, having seen them drained under Thelwell and co.

What did Derek Ferguson say about David Weir to Rangers?

When Weir’s name emerged earlier this year, Derek Ferguson was excited about the things he could bring to Rangers, and that would still be the same today, despite the growing unrest.

Back in February, he told Ibrox News: “The name that crops up when thinking about candidates for this role is David Weir. He’s done a great job at Brighton and is one who instantly comes to the fore.

It’s a good decision by the club to get a sporting director in. Koppen was technical director, but he’s been doing too many jobs.

Weir’s experience in the game could be crucial to get the Gers heading back in the right direction, and it would be silly if they didn’t at least consider it.
