Steven Gerrard has already said why Rangers should sign ‘game-changer’ on a free transfer

Rangers could use the January transfer window as an opportunity to truly challenge in the second half of the Scottish Premiership season.

Rangers host Livingston on Saturday (November 22) on the back of consecutive wins in the Scottish Premiership, with Danny Rohl’s men climbing up to fourth position.

As it stands, a title charge looks out of reach with Hearts pulling 12 points clear, although Rangers can finish above a Celtic side who are only five points above in second.

To give themselves a true shot of success from January onwards, a successful transfer window is a must, and Rohl may have one specific target on his radar.

Ryan Kent is available to sign on a free transfer

Ryan Kent is set to become a free agent following the expiration of his contract at MLS side Seattle Sounders.

Kent decided against signing a new contract at Rangers when his contract ran out in June 2023, with the 29-year-old then enduring a disastrous spell at Fenerbahce.

Across an illustrious five seasons at Ibrox, the former Liverpool winger became a fan favourite, and he could now return to Scotland as a free agent.

Famed for his blistering pace and skilful footwork, Kent destroyed opposition defences in the Premiership, amassing 33 goals and 56 assists in 218 appearances for the club.

As a low-risk and high-reward capture in January, the Oldham-born winger is someone Rohl should take a gamble on, with some former comments perhaps spiking excitement.

Steven Gerrard on ‘game changer’ Kent

While Kent’s departure from Rangers was mainly down to not fitting in Michael Beale’s system, the Englishman was an incredible success under Steven Gerrard.

Including 16 goal involvements during Gerrard’s 2020/21 title-winning campaign, the exciting winger totalled 28 goals and 32 assists under the Liverpool legend and remains his fifth-most used player of all-time.

It’s clear that the former Aston Villa boss was a huge fan of Kent, and speaking about him after a stunning display against Willem II in September 2020, he labelled him a ‘game-changer’.

From an attacking point of view, I think Ryan was the game-changer for us tonight,” Gerrard admitted.

“He does incredibly well running in behind and he has added that into his game this season. “He gets us the penalty for the breakthrough and he is just a constant threat. He is so sharp and he has added a different dimension to his game.

“He is a pleasure to watch and coach and we just need to enjoy him. He has got the hunger and the desire and he is putting in the application to improve his numbers.”
