Danny Rohl snub to spell the end for Joe Rothwell as Rangers eye January upheaval
Joe Rothwell could find himself on the chopping block at Rangers as early as the January transfer window.
The veteran Englishman has started just five games in the Premiership so far this season, and he hasn’t really had the impact that many people were expecting.
Rangers only signed Rothwell from Bournemouth in the summer, but his time north of the border has hardly got going, with convincing performances few and far between.
The midfielder was part of Russell Martin’s promotion-winning Southampton team in 2023-24, and it has since become apparent that he was likely signed with the previous boss in mind.

Danny Rohl has hardly played Joe Rothwell so far
Kevin Thelwell is under pressure at Rangers after he oversaw several pieces of woeful transfer business in the summer.
The Gers have been left with multiple players who are little more than dead weight within the squad, and many have only recently walked through the door in Govan.
Thelwell and Co. will be desperate to continue to try and overhaul the squad in January, and make room for further additions to fit the needs of Danny Rohl after his recent appointment.
- Rothwell has played just 19 minutes of domestic action under Rohl
- He hasn’t started a game since 23 October
- He has managed just two goal contributions from 19 appearances this term
That will undoubtedly require plenty of outgoings, and Rothwell could be one of the first victims of that upheaval after how little playing time he has received under the new boss so far.
The 30-year-old started in the Europa League against Brann in Rohl’s first assignment in the dugout, but since then, he has managed just 19 minutes of action, and they came in the Premier Sports Cup semi-final.
It has quickly become clear that Rohl doesn’t fancy Rothwell, and that is unlikely to change any time soon.

When you then throw in the fact that he joined from a Premier League club a matter of months ago, he is likely to also be commanding a significant wage at Ibrox, making him a prime candidate to come under the axe this winter.
Joe Rothwell exit could be fairly easy for Rangers to facilitate
Rothwell attracted plenty of interest before joining Rangers in the summer, as he even turned down offers from La Liga to move north of the border.
The Gers had to work hard behind the scenes to secure his signature, and although that has quickly been made to look like a shocking move, it could easily work in their favour if they do try and move him on.
There were no shortage of suitors for the former Leeds United loanee in the summer, and now just a few months down the line, it would be a huge surprise if there are no longer teams who are willing to take Rothwell.
He has quickly fallen back below the likes of Mohamed Diomande and Connor Barron in the pecking order, and that is a damning reflection on a player of his level of experience.
His time at Rangers simply hasn’t worked out at all, and it may be best for all parties if it comes to an end as quickly as possible in January.
