Danny Rohl has clear contract priority at Rangers amid Derek Cornelius uncertainty

Rangers are yet to make a decision on signing Derek Cornelius on a permanent deal.

Rangers have the option to purchase Cornelius after his loan spell from Marseille finishes, if he impresses at Ibrox.

However, the Daily Record reported on 11 November that the Gers are still monitoring their centre-back situation.

That uncertainty over the future of the position will not help Danny Rohl as he tries to turn the Light Blues’ season around.

Rangers need to extend John Souttar’s contract

John Souttar’s Rangers contract ends in the summer, and they simply have to extend his deal to keep him in Govan.

That should be Rohl’s clear priority when it comes to the position, as he is a leader and a seasoned Scotland international.

The Gers risk losing Souttar, Cornelius and Nasser Djiga, who is on loan from Wolves, at the end of the season, which would leave them with a huge amount of work to do.

They would have just Emmanuel Fernandez and Clinton Nsiala as their options in the position, if all three were to depart.

Why is Souttar extension so important for Rangers?

Souttar has proven himself as one of the standout players in a rough period for the Gers, and he deserves to be rewarded for that.

More importantly, the 20-cap Tartan Army ace would be difficult to replace, especially if he does not bring in a transfer fee, so Rohl must push for an extension for his best defender.

Souttar averages 6.27 clearances, 4.36 ball recoveries and wins 5.18 of his duels per 90 minutes, as per Sofascore.

It is unfathomable that he could leave G51 for free, so a new deal must be agreed upon, given that the likes of Cornelius and Djiga are yet to convince since joining the Bears.

The Gers will likely have a lot of signings to make next summer, and they could help themselves reduce the workload for the recruitment team by keeping the 29-year-old around.

The 49ers Enterprises group and Andrew Cavenagh must give Rohl the tools that he needs to rebuild the Auchenhowie side, rather than letting their biggest assets depart at the end of their contracts.
