Andrew Cavenagh faces fan backlash at Ibrox after committing cardinal Rangers sin
Rangers fans will not hold back in letting their feelings known towards Andrew Cavenagh should Rangers’ recent upturn in form not last, according to Derek Ferguson.
Rangers beat Dundee 3-0 at Dens Park last weekend to make it three Scottish Premiership wins in a row under Danny Rohl.
However, that league form has been offset by some disappointing results in cup competitions under the German.
Indeed, Rangers were beaten by Celtic in the Premier Sports Cup semis and have also lost both Europa League games under Rohl.
Rangers are effectively now left playing for the just the Scottish Cup with well over half of the campaign left to go, making for a terrible start to life as chairman for Cavenagh.
Andrew Cavenagh in attendance for Rangers loss vs Celtic
Cavenagh has already overseen some bizarre decisions at Rangers, the biggest being the appointment and subsequent sacking of Russell Martin.
Rangers botched the search for Martin’s Rangers successor, eventually landing on Rohl after Steven Gerrard and Kevin Muscat turned down the job.
Cavenagh was in attendance for the loss to Celtic at Hampden Park, with the American tycoon yet to witness a ‘I was there’ Rangers moment in person.
In the view of Ferguson, speaking exclusively to Ibrox News, Cavenagh committed the cardinal sin of underestimating Rangers Football Club.
And fans at Ibrox will not hold back in letting Cavenagh know their feelings.
“I definitely think he and the 49ers underestimated the task at hand,” Ferguson said. “They’ve not got a grasp of the animal they’ve taken on in Rangers Football Club.
“People don’t realise that it really is 24/7 up here. The challenge first and foremost is to challenge Celtic. I do think they’re slowly starting to understand now.
“But if they don’t, and things don’t consistently improve, the fans will certainly let them know soon. They’ve definitely underestimated what they’ve taken on.”
What would constitute success for Cavenagh and Rangers this season?
As mentioned, Rangers were recently knocked out of the Premier Sports Cup at the semi-final stage by Celtic.
Despite the upturn in Scottish Premiership form, the Gers are still 12 points behind leaders Hearts, albeit with a game in hand.

Even if Hearts were to drastically slip-up, Rangers would also need to string together wins galore and hope that Celtic also drop a large amount of points.
The Europa League campaign is also dead and buried just a handful of games in, even accounting for the bloated knockout stage system.
That leaves just the Scottish Cup, which begins in the fourth-round stage for Rangers in mid-January.
The only way of rescuing this season is to lift that trophy and finish in a European spot in the league.
That would still be a very underwhelming campaign – less so if Celtic finish behind Hearts – but it would at least give Rohl a springboard to build on for next season.
