Andrew Cavenagh sweeps aside honoured Rangers tradition as Danny Rohl finally revealed
Danny Rohl was unveiled as Rangers manager to the media on Tuesday, with all eyes now set on the Europa League clash with Brann.
The mood around Ibrox has been lifted after Rohl signed his Rangers contract, putting an end to a truly awful couple of months that were filled with dread and anger.
Andrew Cavenagh and the Rangers board have been slammed for their handling of situations while at the Gers, but it seems they may have got Rohl’s appointment right eventually.
However, as positive as Rohl‘s first press conference was, a subtle but telling detail has been missed by the Rangers board, which further highlights how little the hierarchy values tradition.

Danny Rohl’s press conference didn’t happen in the Blue Room
The Blue Room is a historic and prestigious part of Rangers, and it has been tradition over the years for managers and head coaches to have their first press conference in this area.
Instead, the interview took place in a standard media room, as Rohl was asked about Russell Martin, among other questions.
- The Blue Room is located inside the Main Stand, in the heart of the club’s historic home
- It is part of the official stadium tour of Ibrox for visitors
- Russell Martin was given the honour of having his first press conference in the Blue Room
On Wednesday, Keith Jackson perfectly summed up the clear lack of effort and thought by the Rangers board to miss such an “honoured” tradition of the club, in the print edition of the Daily Record.
Jackson said: “It’s further proof that Rangers no longer behave like the Rangers their fans recognise.
“Another two fingers flicked in the face of the traditions which mean so very much and which are so coveted by the people on the ground.
“That the press conference took place in a media auditorium rather than in the Blue Room, according to time-honoured tradition on such momentous days? Another sign that the club continues to move in a very different direction.”
The problem is that Cavenagh and Co. have missed yet another small detail, and that’s what counts when it comes to Rangers.

Even if Rohl turns out to be a good appointment, the Rangers board have shown their true colours.

Can the Rangers board still create a relationship with fans?
Gers fans have been let down time and time again since the American investors arrived, and the appointment of Kevin Thelwell, with the mess that Patrick Stewart continues to make, has only made matters worse.
We’ve seen before that it’s hard to win Rangers fans back over. Rohl was a step in the right direction, but the board have just missed a detail that will most certainly impact their relationship with Gers fans.
Regardless, Rangers fans will be hoping they don’t have to worry about their board of directors again until the January transfer window, as an exciting time lies ahead at Ibrox with Rohl’s first few games.
