Rangers' board have drawn the majority of the flak after shocking scenes following the loss to Falkirk.

Russell Martin was finally sacked by Rangers, after a dismal start to his Ibrox reign, in which he won just one of his first seven league games.

He was given the boot after 17 matches, and the 49ers Enterprises group and Andrew Cavenagh, the majority owners, will now look for a new man to lead the Gers.

Martin has been the subject of abuse from a section of Rangers fans since he was appointed, but the latest scenes may have crossed the line.

Rangers board blasted after controversial Russell Martin scenes

Rangers supporters tried to confront Martin after the 1-1 draw with Falkirk on 5 October, and he had to be given a police escort.

Simon Jordan has hit out at the board, and their lack of condemnation for those fans who were involved in the post-match antics.

Speaking live on talkSPORT on 6 October (10:40 am), he said: “The Rangers board are weak, they should be saying something.

“They should be out front and centre, saying with all due respect, a football manager not being successful is one thing.

“This kind of behaviour is another thing entirely.”

Simon Jordan is right, the Rangers board are weak

The new board have had a nightmare since they came into Govan in the summer.

The appointment of Martin was ill-advised as the majority of Gers supporters did not want him to be handed the role.

  • Martin presided over 17 games in the Gers dugout
  • He won just five of those matches, which is not good enough
  • The Gers are 11 points off the top of the Scottish Premiership

They have continued to back him, despite it being painfully clear, that he was not the right man for the job going forward and had underestimated the size of the task at hand.

Jordan is right, at the moment, they do look extremely weak, and they need to speak out about the actions of some supporters, which was over the line.

Perhaps more importantly, though, they need to get the next appointment right, and reassure fans that they are shrewd football operators, and quell the discontent that has emerged over the last few months.

If they fail to do so, the scenes will only get worse, and they will continue to drive supporters away, which will ultimately show in the stands at Ibrox.
