Tom English mocks Kevin Thelwell over what he said at Danny Rohl unveiling

Kevin Thelwell was one of four Rangers figures put in front of the press at Danny Rohl’s grand unveiling on Tuesday.

Rohl was questioned about his Rangers appointment, having withdrawn from the race last week before being appointed on Monday.

Patrick Stewart made himself look silly with one answer, while Andrew Cavenagh was the other high-profile figure present for the presser at Ibrox.

BBC reporter Tom English paid close attention to what was said, and seemingly mocked Thelwell over one of his replies.

Kevin Thelwell asked about appointment of son Robbie

Thelwell came under fire for giving son Robbie a job at Rangers, as he took over as head of recruitment earlier this month.

The former Everton chief was inevitably asked about this appointment on Tuesday and gave the type of response expected.

“I think Robbie probably went through a more rigorous process than probably anybody else that is employed by this football club, truth be known,” Kevin Thelwell said.

“What I do know is that he will work 25/8 to bring success for this football club, and him and Dan [Purdy] will work very closely together and very well together.

“I am looking forward to him proving that he is going to be an excellent employee for Rangers.”

English jokingly took exception to Thelwell’s use of the term ’25/8′, which was clearly an exaggeration on the more commonly used ’24/7′.

Posting on X on Tuesday, English said: “Kevin Thelwell said his son Robbie is working “25/8” for Rangers. It begs the question why isn’t he working 26/9 or 27/10?

Thelwell an easy target for Rangers critics – but rightly so

English’s comment was no doubt said with tongue firmly in cheek, but it is no surprise Thelwell has left himself open to repeated jokes and criticism.

Indeed, as Derek Ferguson exclusively told Ibrox News, Thelwell is the butt of all jokes among Rangers supporters after hiring his son.

This, remember, at a time when Rangers have endured a truly dismal start to his first campaign overseeing things – and that’s not even mentioning the botched search for Russell Martin’s replacement.

Thelwell – and indeed Stewart, Cavenagh and Paraag Marathe – need to hope things now settle down for a bit.

A victory for Rangers over Brann in Rohl’s first game in charge on Thursday would go a long way to achieving that.
