Danny Rohl was officially unveiled as Rangers' new manager on Tuesday, bringing an end to a farcical search.

Rohl was appointed by Rangers on Monday, but only after high-profile rejections from Steven Gerrard and Kevin Muscat.

Former Sheffield Wednesday manager Rohl's first Rangers game will be against Brann in the Europa League on Thursday.

Prior to that, Rohl spoke to the assembled press at Ibrox for the first time on Tuesday and answered a number of questions.

Also present were Andrew Cavenagh, Kevin Thelwell and Patrick Stewart, with all three having themselves come under fire for the nature of the drawn-out search.

Patrick Stewart clearly unprepared for Danny Rohl appointment question

It was pretty obvious the line of questioning Cavenagh and Stewart in particular would face at Rohl's unveiling.

Stewart has come under intense scrutiny at Rangers for his part in managerial search, which spanned 15 days in total after Russell Martin's sacking.

  • Rohl was appointed as Rangers manager on 20 October
  • The German was unveiled to the media on 21 October
  • First match in charge will come against Brann on 23 October
  • That is followed by first league match at Ibrox vs Kilmarnock on 26 October

The Rangers chief executive made a rather ridiculous proclamation, though, when stating that Rangers had "got their man" in Rohl.

No Rangers fan will be kidded into being told that Gerrard and then Muscat were not the top choices, followed by Rohl.

As reporter Kheredine Idessane put it on BBC Sport's live blog on Tuesday, it was an answer that raised more than a few eyebrows in the Ibrox press room.

Quite why Stewart did not just provide an honest answer - even if not going into the full details - is anyone's guess.

Danny Rohl to follow similar path as Steven Gerrard with first game

Rohl will oversee Rangers' Europa League clash with Brann in Norway on Thursday, meaning a very quick turnaround.

It also means Rohl will follow a similar path to Gerrard, whose first game was also in a European tie in July 2018.

That came against North Macedonian side FK Shkupi and ended in a 2-0 victory for the Gers at Ibrox.

Rohl will be hoping for a similar result this week, and indeed a reign that sees him also go down in Rangers folklore just like title-winner Gerrard.
