Ally McCoist changes stance on Steven Gerrard as reason for Rangers snub emerges

Andrew Cavenagh and Paraag Marathe have had a rough few days as Steven Gerrard took himself out of the race to be the next Rangers manager.

Russell Martin was sacked after dropping points against Falkirk, leading to speculation of the Liverpool icon’s return to the Gers.

Ally McCoist wasn’t surprised by Gerrard’s snub, with rumours circulating over his tax issues after working at Al-Ettifaq.

The former forward has now suggested reasons for the Englishman turning down the job at the Glaswegian outfit following the developments in G51.

Steven Gerrard issue mooted in Rangers interview process

McCoist wonders why Gerrard would speak with Cavenagh and Marathe if personal matters were really a concern.

The Gers icon suggested that something must have occurred during the interview process for the Liverpool icon to fill the Ibrox vacancy which led to his rejection.

It looks like the American owners were unable to convince the 45-year-old head coach that the Light Blues would be the right fit for him.

Speaking on talkSPORT on 14 October, McCoist said: “I would be interested to know what changed Gerrard’s mind or what didn’t convince him. I said yesterday, what’s the paramount importance for Gerrard? His family, and that takes priority over everything.”

The Scotsman added: “I’m thinking to myself, is it maybe a financial thing? But the more I think about it, if it were that, he wouldn’t have come for the interview in the first place, would he? Either they haven’t sold him on it, or I would suggest something has happened in the interview process that hasn’t taken his fancy.”

Gerrard admitted to Rio Ferdinand that he was ready to get back in the dugout after his disappointing spells at Aston Villa and Al-Ettifaq, but it appears that he doesn’t feel he can manage the Glaswegian outfit right now.

Kevin Thelwell stumbling block for Steven Gerrard at Ibrox

While Gerrard was open to working with Kevin Thelwell, he wanted a significant say in the Gers’ recruitment strategy.

Rangers seem to have given most of the authority of transfers to the new sporting director, with a lot of talent signed from down south in the summer.

The former Everton chief came in as part of the revamped structure at the Light Blues after the takeover, but fans haven’t taken to him too well.

Thelwell’s reputation in G51 isn’t the best, and it wouldn’t be surprising to know that his influence at Ibrox led to Gerrard’s doubts over a possible return.
