‘This is why Steven Gerrard may have really said no to Rangers job – What is the world coming to?’

Steven Gerrard has decided against a Rangers return, despite being a strong fan favourite.

Gerrard’s return to Ibrox looked to be moments away from completion as fans looked to him to save their season.

Indeed, Russell Martin was sacked at Rangers after a series of terrible league results plummeted the Gers to eighth in the Scottish Premiership.

However, it has now been widely reported that Gerrard will not succeed Martin, with fans desperate to know why.

Steven Gerrard may have pulled out due to poor Russell Martin treatment

Gerrard told Rio Ferdinand recently that if he returns to Rangers, it will be “with a few different people” around him.

People who would give the former Liverpool legend support in areas where he needed it.

It was shared, however, that Gerrard simply believed the timing wasn’t right.

Writing via the print version of The Sun (page 57, 12 October), Dan King suggested other reasons why the Englishman may have turned the chance down after talks.

“Perhaps Gerrard pulled out of returning to Rangers because the people he might have ended up needing were policemen on horseback and the area could have been a stadium car park,” he wrote.

“What is the world coming to?” King later added.

Indeed, this comes after Martin needed a police escort during Rangers’ draw at Falkirk to escape taunts from fans and onlookers, who had blocked the team coach.

It seems that Gerrard may have pondered, even for a millisecond, what it would’ve been like to be in Martin’s shoes, with plans now shifting dramatically again.

Rangers fans will need to be patient with the next manager

The treatment towards Martin, closer to the end of his tenure, would’ve been enough to make the strongest of people crack.

But while the results were unconvincing, it wouldn’t be surprising if the reaction to Martin puts off others from taking the job.

However, the imminent arrival of a new manager brings a chance for change in both results and attitudes from fans.

It is unlikely that a 180 in performances will happen upon arrival with several different profiles of players at Ibrox. But if given time, this could be the start of better days for the Gers.

As a result, most fans will have to, and many will be inclined to exercise a little bit of patience moving forward.
