Rangers could announce Steven Gerrard hire within hours after Andrew Cavenagh apology

Rangers could now be just hours away from confirming a sensational return for Steven Gerrard.

The Govan outfit have been without a manager since Russell Martin was shown the door following Sunday’s 1-1 draw with Falkirk in the Premiership, but that could be about to change imminently.

Gerrard met with Rangers chiefs Andrew Cavenagh and Paraag Marathe for talks over the role, and he is now on the verge of being announced as the successor to Martin at Ibrox.

Rapid progress has been made in the managerial search in recent days, and an appointment is now likely to be just hours away.

Steven Gerrard could be announced at Rangers today

Gerrard is still hugely popular among the Rangers fans after securing the club’s 55th Premiership title during his previous stint in charge, and he is now set to take the reigns again.

The deal for the Gers to appoint the 45-year-old is “all-but agreed,” and could even be announced within the next 24 hours, according to The Scottish Daily Express.

This comes after Rangers chairman Cavenagh was forced to apologise in a statement for getting the appointment of Martin “wrong.”

Gerrard’s Rangers side lifted the title in 2020-21 and did so in emphatic fashion, by completing the entire Premiership season with an unbeaten record.

Steven Gerrard won his last Premier League point over 1000 days ago

Rangers are a very different club since Gerrard was last here, but the expectations remain exactly the same in that true success only comes with the Premiership title.

It’s now almost four years since he made the decision to step away from his role at Ibrox after preventing Celtic from winning their 10th consecutive title, but things didn’t go as he would have hoped in the Premier League.

The Liverpudlian endured a mixed stint in charge of Aston Villa, which never really reached the heights that many expected.

His team secured his last point in the Premier League three years ago today, when an Ashley Young bullet secured a 1-1 draw at Nottingham Forest in October 2022.

He was dismissed after a 3-0 defeat at Fulham 10 days later, and hasn’t tasted management in British football since that day.

Gerrard’s final point in the English top-flight is now over 1000 days ago, and there is certainly an element of risk to the imminent appointment, given the nature of his managerial CV his his last stint at Ibrox.

However, Rangers need unity and pride back in their team and the club at the moment, and there is no better man to provide that right now.
