Newcastle in advanced talks to hire transfer chief they’ve wanted since he was at Rangers

Rangers’ future has been thrown into the air once again following the recent sacking of Russell Martin.

The 39-year-old was given his marching orders following Sunday’s 1-1 draw with Falkirk, after a dismal start to the season that quickly saw the fanbase turn against him in emphatic fashion.

Steven Gerrard is now set for talks over a Rangers return, as the boss who oversaw the 55th Premiership title win could now be set for a sensational return.

The 45-year-old could be about to reunite with several members of his old backroom team that worked with him, but one familiar figure from his stint at Ibrox certainly will not be returning.

Ex-Rangers sporting director Ross Wilson is set to join Newcastle

Jermain Defoe has already revealed that he would return to Rangers, while the likes of Tom Culshaw and Steve Holland could also potentially form part of Gerrard’s coaching team if his return does materialise.

That would see almost a direct return to the team that the Liverpudlian assembled when he was at the helm in Govan previously, before he left to join Aston Villa in 2021.

Gerrard may have held hope of tempting his former sporting director Ross Wilson into an Ibrox return, but that any suggestion of that is now set to be off the cards, as the transfer chief has agreed to join Newcastle United, according to Ben Jacobs via his X account.

The 41-year-old spent four years as the Gers’ sporting director between 2019 and 2023, and will now take up an identical role at St James’ Park, as talks between the two parties continue to advance.

Wilson has spent the last two years with Nottingham Forest, but the Magpies are long-term admirers of his work, having held an interest in him since he was at Rangers.

Ross Wilson’s work is a reminder of Kevin Thelwell’s failings

Kevin Thelwell has been heavily criticised at Rangers since his arrival back in April, as several of the signings from the summer transfer window are already proving to be questionable investments.

Seeing Wilson get another step up the footballing ladder is a continued reminder of just how poor the recruitment has been since his departure, as he continues to take his career in the game from strength to strength.

While it is unfair to suggest that he judged every single signing perfectly, the likes of Nico Raskin, Kemar Roofe, Calvin Bassey and Ianis Hagi all came through the door during his tenure.

It is simply impossible to suggest that any of Thelwell’s signings so far look likely to get close to matching that level, even if they are still in the early stages of their time with the club.

A return for Wilson was always going to be highly unlikely, but news of his imminent move to Newcastle is a frustrating reminder of what Rangers previously had.
