Jermain Defoe can fulfil his Rangers wish once more after latest Ibrox update

Jermain Defoe is looking increasingly likely to be returning to Rangers.

Russell Martin was sacked at Rangers five days ago, leaving questions as to who his successor would be at Ibrox.

Several names were mooted for the job, including St Mirren’s Stephen Robinson, but all of the signs are pointing towards Steven Gerrard returning to Rangers.

Of course, Gerrard will be looking to bring backroom staff with him, with it looking just as likely that it will include Defoe, whose previous comments at Ibrox will open the door for him to do what he set out to do initially.

‘Rangers are a massive football club’ – Jermain Defoe

Defoe had two spells at Rangers: one on loan and one over an 18-month spell.

His loan saw him score 25 times in 52 appearances across all competitions, while his permanent stay saw him net seven in 22.

He was part of the Gerrard side that won the Scottish Premiership title in 2021, which was something he had always set out to do.

Back in 2019, when he joined the Gers on loan in January, Defoe spoke about what he wanted to achieve in Glasgow, and while he managed that in his second spell, he will be looking to do the same if he joins in a coaching capacity.

Speaking to RangersTV, he said: “I wanted to come here for obvious reasons; I have always known it is a massive football club.

“You want to be part of the history if you can. Winning trophies was another draw, especially how well the lads have done since Stevie has been in.”

Jermain Defoe will be the perfect assistant to Steven Gerrard

Whether Defoe joins at all for a start is still unknown, but if he does, it will likely be as the second in command to Gerrard, to some extent.

Given the relationship they had together and the success that they have both found throughout their career, it has the potential to be a match made in heaven.

Gerrard’s record as Rangers boss

Defoe’s first-ever title win was with Rangers in the 2020-21 season, showcasing the fact that he knows what it takes to find success in Scottish football.

With Rangers starved of it since Gerrard’s departure the season after, the next set of appointments need to be right, and all of the signs are looking as though it will be.
