Jermain Defoe looks ready to go as ex-Rangers star posts Instagram video as Steven Gerrard news emerges

Steven Gerrard looks set to become the new Rangers manager as he closes in on a sensational return to Ibrox.

After Russell Martin’s sacking at Rangers on Sunday, the Liverpool legend has remained one of the favourites for the post.

Gerrard has been out of work since January, but remained well-loved by the Ibrox faithful, being the only manager to secure the Scottish Premiership title for the Gers since their return to the top-flight.

Now, with reports suggesting that Gerrard’s return to Rangers is nearly complete, the manager will be looking to make quick changes to turn the Glaswegians’ fortunes around.

Jermain Defoe suits up amid Rangers return rumours

One thing Gerrard will need to sort out if appointed is his backroom staff.

Michael Beale has usually followed Gerrard as his assistant manager. However, with Beale being disliked by the Ibrox faithful after his failed stint as a manager, it remains to be seen if he returns.

Therefore, the former England international could go for more popular choices to get fans back on side.

One report has suggested that Jermain Defoe will return to Rangers as a coach alongside Gerrard.

The striker had a solid period at the Gers, netting 32 times in 74 matches, with many of these taking place under Gerrard.

Now, amidst the rumours surrounding the former manager’s return, Defoe has posted a video on his Instagram story on 10 October of him wearing a shirt and tie while in the back of a car.

It is unknown if this is related to the current Rangers rumours or if the former striker is off to do something else.

When could Steve Gerrard be appointed Rangers manager?

With things progressing quickly, it is likely that Gerrard will be officially back at Ibrox by the end of the week.

Some reports even suggest that Gerrard could be appointed the Rangers manager on Friday, as the Gers’ owners look to wrap up the deal.

If finalised, the manager will likely look to bring in his staff as soon as possible to help train with the players who aren’t on international duty.

With Dundee United up next, Gerrard may not have a lot of time to get his ideas across before the international break ends.
