Steven Smith claim emerges for Rangers vs Dundee United after Russell Martin sack
Steven Smith may be on his toes as Rangers look for a new manager after sacking Russell Martin.
Andrew Cavenagh has told players to stay away from Auchenhowie for the time being as the Gers continue their search for the Scottish manager’s replacement.
Martin was arguably the worst permanent manager at Ibrox, lasting just 123 days at the Light Blues, and the American owners now have a massive task on their hands to find a successor.
While the US consortium will want to be thorough with their next appointment at the Glaswegian outfit, things need to be put in place sooner rather than later.

Rangers to appoint Steven Smith as interim manager vs Dundee United
Smith could potentially be appointed by the Gers to take charge of the Dundee United fixture on 18 October, Chris Jack says.
The Scottish journalist believes that if a permanent manager isn’t hired at Ibrox during the international break, then the Light Blues’ Under-19s coach may be handed the reins for a game.
With the players away from training at the moment, a temporary management team certainly needs to be put into place as the Glaswegian outfit look for a new head coach.
Speaking on The Rangers Review, Jack said: “I would imagine it would be Smith as the most senior coach at the club. You’re short on options, but if it’s only going to be a one-game gig, then that’s who you go for.”

Steven Gerrard seems to be the frontrunner at Ibrox, with Rio Ferdinand confident the Liverpool icon will return to G51 if given the opportunity.
Whoever fills the vacancy in the Gers’ dugout can’t fail, as that would undoubtedly raise serious concerns about the capabilities of Cavenagh and 49ers Enterprises.
Andrew Cavenagh and Paraag Marathe to be thorough at Ibrox
Cavenagh and Paraag Marathe expect a shortlist of managers in the upcoming meeting in London on 9 October, with the pair aiming to narrow down the names.
Rangers have arguably gone backwards since last season, and the American owners need to correct course sooner rather than later.

With the US consortium now taking the initiative in appointing the next head coach at the Gers, it wouldn’t be surprising to see them take their time.
While a new manager should ideally be through the door before the Dundee United game, it remains to be seen how long Cavenagh and Marathe will take.
