‘Steven Gerrard already has exit plan ahead of new Rangers manager appointment’

Steven Gerrard is once again among the frontrunners for the Rangers job.

Russell Martin was sacked at Ibrox on 5 October, with the 1-1 draw at Falkirk leaving Rangers eighth in the Scottish Premiership for the latest international break.

Paraag Marathe and Andrew Cavenagh have apologised to Rangers fans, admitting they made a mistake by hiring the former Southampton manager.

Gerrard has since been heavily tipped to replace him at Ibrox, with the likes of Derek McInnes and Kevin Muscat also mentioned.

Jamie O’Hara has delivered a warning to those wanting the Liverpool hero back in Govan, though.

Steven Gerrard among favourites for Rangers job

Gerrard is currently out of work after stints at Aston Villa and Al-Ettifaq followed his time at Ibrox, becoming a grandfather in his personal life.

Speaking live on Sky Sports via YouTube, O’Hara has shared the scenario which would see Gerrard quit Ibrox for a second time if he is appointed.

“The problem is if that manager leaves, say Gerrard gets another offer and it’s a better one than Rangers, he leaves and it’s his players,” he said.

“Another manager has then got to come in and he’s got to deal with the players that Gerrard brought in, so that’s why you have these sporting directors now.

“If Gerrard goes, because a Premier League club comes in for him, because he will, which has happened already, a new manager has got to come in and deal with Gerrard’s players.

“We do know if Gerrard gets a better offer, he will leave.”

How did Steven Gerrard leave Rangers?

After sensationally returning the Scottish Premiership title to Ibrox, with Rangers finishing as invincibles, it quickly became clear that the next challenge was coming.

Aston Villa came knocking for Gerrard in November 2021, with Gary McAllister and Michael Beale following him to Villa Park and the Premier League.

He only lasted 11 months, with Rangers also struggling for success in the Scottish Premiership since his exit from Glasgow.

Giovanni van Bronckhorst, Beale, Philippe Clement, Barry Ferguson and Martin have all failed since at Ibrox, could Gerrard return with a bang?

With Rangers paying seven figures in compensation for Martin and other managers in recent years, the next appointment simply has to work long term.

It is down to Marathe and Cavenagh to sniff out any possible exit plan before anything is confirmed.
